I Like the Sound of That
Michelle
I’ve paced in my living room so much, I’m surprised there’s not a trench in the floor by now. I’m about to pull my hair out if I don’t hear something soon.
The front door opens and in walks Eve with Dane right behind her.
“Oh my God!” I say, running over to hug her. “You’re in so much trouble, but I’m so glad you’re safe.”
Dane says, “I’ll let you two be alone.”
Before he walks out the door, Eve stops him. “No, coach. I think you should stay.”
I look at her, and she says, “He and I talked.”
“And?”
“And I realize that maybe it’s not just a fling between the two of you. Maybe it’s more.”
I look at him and smile. “Yeah, it is.”
“Mom, I’m not mad that you found someone who will make you happy. I’m not even mad that it’sDane.Boy, that sounds weird. I was upset that you didn’t tell me. You and I have always had this cool relationship where we are honest with each other, yet you kept the biggest thing in your life from me. I would have much rather known about this than all of your terrible hobbies.”
“Hey, my hobbies weren’t all bad,” I defend.
“I told Dane how you grew weed.”
I look over at him, and he says, “Maybe we find some other hobbies.”
I turn my attention back to her. “We didn’t do any of this to hurt you. And if it makes you uncomfortable–”
She stops me. “It kind of does, but I’ll get used to it. Mom, you and I have never had someone actually give a shit about us that wasn’t a blood relative. I think it’s great you found someone who cares about both of us.”
I look over at him. “Yeah, he’s pretty great.”
Eve looks sickened. “Gross. Yeah, that’s going to take some getting used to.”
“Sorry.”
“It’s alright. Iwillget used to it. Okay, I’m going to go in my room and then shower and such.”
“But–” I begin.
“I know, I know. We still need to talk. I’m grounded again. We will talk in a little while. You guyshave a moment to yourself. Come yell at me when you’re done.”
As she’s walking away, I say, “Text all your relatives and tell them you’re safe. They’re probably still out looking. Oh, and call Grandma.”
Once she’s gone, I giggle. “There. Now, my mom can yell at her for me.”
I walk over and stand on my tiptoes to kiss Dane. “I have no idea what you said to her, but thank you.”
“I just told her the truth.”
“Which is?”
“That I’m in love with her mother, and I would do anything in the world to see her happy. And one day, maybe I’ll be lucky enough to call her my wife.”
“Oh yeah?” I smile while kissing him.
