“Are you okay?”
Her eyes find mine again. “I’m sorry I came over here and dumped all of this on you. I was just upset, and you were the only one I wanted to talk to.”
“Baby, you don’t ever have to apologize for coming here or venting to me. I’m always here for whatever you need.”
Her eyes glisten with tears again. “Man, I wish I would’ve met you back then instead of him.”
“Me too. But we found each other now, and that’s all that matters.”
“I’m also sorry that our sexy time together was cut short.”
I smile. ‘You have priorities. I get it. I’m just sorry I didn’t get to make you come.”
“Rain check?”
“Anytime, anywhere, beautiful.”
She leans over to lay her head on my chest. I hate that she’s gone through all of this tonight, but I’m glad she felt comfortable enough to come here. I want to be her safe space.
I kiss the top of her head, knowing she’s going to have to leave soon but trying to enjoy this moment as much as possible.
Chapter thirty-nine
Hard Talks
Michelle
“Dang, Mom. This is quite the spread,” Eve says while looking over the massive breakfast I made. “With grocery prices, did you have to put a second mortgage on the house?”
“No,” I laugh.
Just put a dent in my credit card.
I say, “I just thought after last night, you could use an elaborate breakfast. Plus, we can snack on baked goods all day. I figure we can have a movie marathon and watch whatever you want.”
“Mom, you don’t have to do this.”
“Do what?” I ask as innocently as I can.
“Overcompensate for Dadby being Super Mom.”
“Honey, no one would ever label me as Super Mom.” I laugh.
“I would.” She gives a weak smile.
“Thanks, kid.”
She picks up a danish and fiddles with it in her hands. "So, what happened last night?”
“What do you mean?” I take a bite of a bagel.
“I mean, what happened when you went over and yelled at Dad?”
My chewing slows down. “How did you–”
“Mom, come on. I know you. There’s no way you would leave the house so late without having something else in mind. I knew you wouldn’t let him get off scot-free.”
I think for a moment, trying to figure out how much I want to divulge.
