Carly finally answered, “I’m fine with whatever.”

Margot forced the most absurd smile she’d ever attempted, stretching it to her ears. “Okay, yeah. I don’t know that I really cared about food at your age, either. Not that I can eat right now. I’m trying my best to lose some weight for the wedding.” She shook her head, feeling her heart rate racing almost as quickly as her mouth was puking out words. “So I’m in the beginnings of a very serious diet. Not that it’s working. Not yet, anyway.”

Having run out of breath, Margot finally stopped talking with a long exhalation. She glanced at Remi and whispered, “Sorry.”

Remi looked back at Carly. “How’s your mother?”

“Don’t even get me started,” Carly replied.

Remi dared to ask, “Why do you say that?”

“She just doesn’t get me. At. All. I don’t know…she’s changed lately. I just need a break.”

A buzz sounded, and Margot whipped her head around to see the door finally opening.Thank God!She didn’t care what came out, as long as something took the attention away from this debacle. She had no trouble getting on stage in front of thousands in a play, but performing for her future stepdaughter was like stepping onstage in the lead role without having been given a script.
