"You know, I don't think that's something we can do," Theo chuckles, stretching his arm behind his neck as he grins at me. That fucker also knows what he's doing.

"Fine," I huff. I try to sit up so I can at least get off of Killian's lap, but he holds me to him.

"Stay," he says, his voice gruff. "Please."

I instantly relax into his touch. What can I say? I'm a sucker for one of my guys asking nicely.

"Like I was saying, before we got interrupted. I don't want you guys to risk anything just to try and get Max put behind bars for a few months."

"Are you sure?" Killian asks, his brows drawn down. "There are ways we can make it happen."

"Without some sort of fallout to your career?"

His jaw clenches before he sighs and shakes his head. "Probably not. Especially with the big case and investigation going on right now."

"Then I don't give a shit. You already beat him half to death. I'm not sure anything could actually teach that guy a lesson, but if jail's not an option, that's definitely up there on the list of things that could."

"How're you holding up, by the way?" Stone asks from his spot next to Killian. "I know you don't like the sight of blood."

And there certainly was a lot of it. The contrast between the dark blood and pale marble of the balcony only emphasized it.

"I'm sorry you had to see me like that," Killian says softly, brushing some hair behind my ear.

I hold Killian's hand against my face, leaning into his touch.

"Thank you for washing your hands after," I say. "You did what you had to do. It felt good, watching Max get what's been a long time coming."

I let out a soft yawn.

"We should get some rest," Milo says softly.

I turn my head to look at him and see his eyes are already drifting shut. I guess Stone must've given him some pain meds. He looks adorable, all sleepy like this.

I reach out and trace the red marks on his neck. They're probably going to bruise up pretty dark in the upcoming days. I would know.

But to me, when I see them, they'll just serve as reminders for how hard Milo fought to protect me.

"We should," I say.

Theo rolls over and turns off the lamp on my nightstand, casting the room in darkness.

After a little shifting, I settle, sandwiched between Killian and Milo, feeling the safest I ever have.

"Goodnight, guys."

A chorus of goodnights greet me and my eyes flutter shut.

CHAPTER 40

Reyna

"Are you nervous?" Milo asks me quietly, holding my hand in the backseat of the car.

"I mean, a little. This is big news. I know my parents have already met you all and stuff, but this is basically a 'meet the folks' type of situation, right?" I shift nervously in my seat, trying to find a position where it doesn't feel like the seat belt is choking me.

"I mean, we are telling your parents that we're your scent match and that we intend on spending the rest of our lives together," Theo nods. "That's big news."

"I don't know if that was very helpful," I groan, burying my head in my hands.
