He said there were only a few phones that had cell service in this place. I assume one of those phones has to be his, considering he's the boss around here.

I find it and try to wipe the blood off on the cleaner parts of his suit jacket.

I swipe up, but the phone is locked.

Of course it's locked.

He couldn't keep a phone that probably contained all the deep dark secrets of this crazy master plan unlocked.

I grit my teeth and my breath comes back in fast-paced huffs as I grip his shoulder and use all my strength to roll him over onto his back.

His eyes stare up at the ceiling, lifeless.

Even in death, that look of shock and fear is still there.

I hold his phone up to his face and that seems to do the trick.

When I find the phone app, I immediately type in the most familiar phone number I know.

Unfortunately, I don't know any of my guys’ phone numbers by heart. I'll have to change that. Just in case, not because I'm planning on getting kidnapped again, but because I think it would be a good thing to know.

The phone rings a few times. God. Please, please, please pick up.

"Hello?" My mom's voice filters through the phone, and I break down into sobs.

CHAPTER 49

Stone

“You’re under arrest for bribery, conspiracy, and public corruption,” I growl.

“Wh—what?” The police chief sputters, staring at me with wide eyes as he stands in the doorway to his ostentatious home in nothing but a pair of sweatpants.

Despite his alpha designation, his bulk has started settling more on his paunch than anywhere else. I guess his age is catching up to him.

His gaze darts behind me and he swallows audibly when he sees the multiple squad cars, ready to take him in.

“We don’t want to make a scene,” I say slowly, my hands resting loosely on my belt.

That’s a lie.

I totally want to fucking make a scene.

These past few days have been fucking hell for all of us.

Theo’s case has been put on pause, but with all the information coming out about different people involved in this bullshit situation, including big players like the chief of police, his entire team is scrambling to keep up. Their case just got a whole lot bigger.

Killian has been swamped with all of his work, too. He’s using every resource available to him to try and figure out what the hell is going on.

Milo has barely slept a wink. He’s glued to his computers every possible second of the day, trying to find Reyna.

Unfortunately, all he seems to dig up are the layers upon layers of conspiracy woven into this city. Stuff that goes back decades.

This shit goes deeper than a few councilmen participating in the omega trafficking rings of the Southside.

Everywhere we seem to look, there’s another layer of rot we have to carve out.

Which is what I’m doing now.
