He was? Awww. “Me, too.”
“Are they going to come back for you?” Brennan frowned.
My heart twisted. “I hope not.”
“When he dropped you off, the agent said that he didn’t think he would need to,” Spencer assured.
Relief filled me. “Agent Weigmier seems decent. It also seemed like he was bending rules for me. Which is weird, because I got the idea that the Temporal Authoritylovestheir rules. When I asked him he said that it was his job.”
“Well, I’m happy he hid you with us. I’m still confused about leaving you in the park with all your injuries,” Wes said.
“From what I remember, we were out of time. Also, he was trying not to leave a trail in order to protect me.” I frowned. “He didn’t ask me anything about you or my association with this world. I don’t think it was jankiness. With all their rules, everything was deliberate. I think even me keeping my phone was intentional.”
“Making notes for yourself was brilliant,” Jett praised.
“Do you recall why you went to the infirmary and got new casts?” Spencer asked.
“All I remember was crying, then waking up there. They were relocating me so it might have been a seizure? Also, I apparently smell like alpha bait.” I shrugged, leaning into Wes.
“You do smell like alpha bait.” Wes nuzzled me.
Evan gave me a look. “There are other worlds with alphas?”
I nodded. “There are other worlds with lots of things. I sort of wish that I would have brought home the cat I made friends with.”
That wouldn’t be breaking a rule, would it?
“You’re from another world?” Brennan frowned. “One with no alphas.”
“No alphas–or designations of any kind. No packs. No knots. No delicious smells. No bonds. You’re also a little more advanced in science and social programs. I’m sorry, Brennan. I always tried to tell you the truth. Really, I do have a PhD. And I used to compete in piano. I first met Wes in a dream when I was ten. Also, I’m so glad that I didn’t go back to a world where noone probably even noticed that I was even gone.” A sob escaped my lips, and I buried my face into Wes again.
“I’m happy you're back.” Brennan’s voice went soft.
That made my heart grow two sizes. “Really? Even though I play Volkov too fast?”
“Do you even have Volkov?”
“No. But I’d love to play some of my pieces for you sometime when I have full use of my hands again. I still have my competition pieces memorized,” I sniffed.
“I…I’d like that.”
Jett and Wes asked me a ton of questions about legalities and science. Spencer was quiet. I squeezed his hand.
“What happens to people convicted?” Spencer finally asked.
“I… I asked about your dad. I don’t remember the conversation, but I wrote it down,” I said quietly. “I can show you later?”
“No secrets. Seriously,” Brennan grumbled.
“I told them about my father,” Spencer said.
“From what Agent Weigmier told me, your dad is still alive, just in prison. But Dr. K died a few years ago. They wouldn’t let me see your dad or write him a letter. But they said he might be released for old age, and I said I’d take him. I don’t know if that was overstepping but–”
Spencer dragged me into his lap and pressed me to him. “Thank you.”
I nuzzled his neck. I’d tell him the part about the smuggling ring later.
“You volunteered to dowhat?” Brennan scowled.
