Chapter Twelve

Brennan

Iwalked into the living room and saw Jett on the phone, Grace on the floor, and Wes looking like the world was ending, Lexi crouched next to him. Evan was nowhere to be seen. Probably upset by all this.

We didn’t need this right now. We’d barely recovered from Caroline. How dare Wes keep this from us? We were a family, and families didn’t hide things. Families also protected each other. Clearly, Wes needed to be protected from himself.

I stalked back into the kitchen, grabbed my phone, and dialed Morty, our pack lawyer.

“Brennan, it’s a little early, is everything okay?” Morty asked.

“Apparently, Wes has a mate no one knew about, and she showed up yesterday,” I growled, anger bubbling inside me. How dare he?

“Wes? Not who I’d expect,” he replied. “I always thought Spencer would have a secret mate or baby. What does she want? Money? A place in the pack?”

“Of course she wants mo–” I paused. Grace hadn’t asked for anything. She also seemed willing to leave. But everything still felt suspicious. “She wants something. I just don’t know what.”

“Are you looking to buy her off or dissolve the bond legally? I’m assuming there is a bond? Is it consensual?” he asked.

“No money. We don’t negotiate with exes. They were young when they bonded, apparently. It could be considered abandoned. Wes said he’d file the paperwork. I need this handled quickly and quietly. My pack, my omega, can’t handle another Caroline.” I looked out the window and saw an ambulance pull up.

Evan wanting to keep her worried me. He had such a big heart, and I didn’t want to see him get hurt.

“I can’t believe Wes kept this from me,” I added, the betrayal still stinging.

“Did he saywhy?”

“He thought she was dead. Wes doesn’t feel the bond, but the test was positive.” I understood that her parents didn’t want her mating Wes back then. But they weren't teenagers anymore. If someone was keeping me from my mate, I certainly wouldn’t waityears.

“Yes, I can work with that,” he replied. “Did she seem… agreeable?”

“Yes.” After all, she said she’d leave.

Lexi marched into the kitchen with her annoying bossy face on.

“I’ve got to handle a few things here. I’ll talk to you later.” I hung up before he could respond.

Her arms crossed over her chest. “I hope you didn’t do anything stupid.”

“I’m trying to protect my pack, Lexi,” I growled. “Also, no shoes in the house.”

“I didn’t expect to stay. I was going to take her to the station. Of course, you’re trying to protect your pack. I get it. Just please, don’t do anything before you talk to Wes and Evan and get the full story. Grace is… complicated, but yesterday I didn’t get that she was a danger to your pack, but she probably isindanger,” Lexi replied. “And she’sterrified.”

“All the more reason to get her out of my life.” I rubbed the bridge of my nose with my thumb and forefinger. “Are you taking her to the station?”

“She’s going to the hospital. I think Wes and Evan are going with her.”

Jett came in. “Wes and Grace aremated?I’m so confused.”

“I’ll be in touch.” She left.

“I’ve already called the lawyer,” I huffed, looking at all the abandoned dishes. “Do you want me to warm up your food, Honey?”

“Please, Dear? Huh. While Grace seems sweet, her memory loss and no records feel off,” Jett replied. “Hopefully, she’s okay. That was a serious seizure.”

“I’m sure she’s fine.” I put his eggs in the microwave.

“Do you think Wes still cares for her?”
