“No. I…” I stopped. It sounded silly to say it out loud.

“Oh, I see. Does this mean I shouldn’t take her to the annual PIIP Symposium? I got us added since it’s invitation-only. She wanted to tour PIIP and see the particle cutter,” Spencer said. “We want to do some investigating for our project now that she’s formally joining the team.”

I thought for a moment. Wow, a romantic trip to an exclusive science convention. That sly dog. “That sounds like something she’d love.”

“Pretty sure that’s just a meh ocean. We’ll take her to a better one,” Evan said.

Spencer tapped on his phone. “I will refrain from taking her to good oceans until you do, but anywhere else is okay?”

“That’s fair,” I replied. “Please, teach her all the boring sports.” I grinned at Spencer. “Seriously though. She loves dancing with you and Jett in the living room.”

“Grace catches on fast.” Jett nodded.

Brennan looked out the window. Evan put his head back on his shoulder. Jett reached over and squeezed Brennan’s hand.

“Brennan, do you wish for me to wait?” Spencer asked. “I’m not trying to push things. I just haven’t felt this way about someone in a long time.”

Brennan shook his head. “This is a me problem, not a her problem. I’m happy that you’re at a point where you want to pursue her. But, once again, we’re not ready for her to join the pack yet. At the very least from a purely legal standpoint, even without the investigations. Though we now have a lawyer who isn’t Katie.”

“I appreciate you trying,” I told him. “She’s been loading the dishwasher the way you like.”

“True. She still holds her mug weirdly.”

“Such random things to be bothered about.” Evan rolled his eyes. “Spence, treat my girl like a princess, okay?”

A smile danced on Spencer’s lips. “It will be my privilege.”

Chapter Fifty-Nine

Grace

“Is Marcos going to be there tonight?” I asked, as Riley and I got our hair done at a fancy place. We’d already finished nails and makeup.

“Marcos?” Riley frowned at her phone.

“Well, I saw his dads at the last one. If he were going to this one, it might be more fun for you. You could hide under a tablewith a tray of canapes and talk about people,” I said. “Just a thought.”

Riley wasn’t looking forward to this.

She laughed, tapping on her phone. “Love it. Did you ever do that?”

“Not at galas but other things, with my best friend. Usually it was a tray of taco dip.” Thinking of her, of the way she betrayed me, still hurt all these years later.

“Pretty sure there will be no taco dip. I hope they don’t make me go to lots of these.” Riley frowned at her phone. “Marcos won’t be there. But Hiro will be there with his parents. I don’t think he’ll hide under a table with me, but it could be okay.”

“Yeah?” I remembered what she said about not thinking he liked her.

“Yeah. It turns out he’s this reserved and serious guy with resting broody face,” she said. “At the dance he was kind to me, and we studied for the literature test together. I can see now why he and Marcos are friends.”

“I’m glad he’s a nice guy.”

“I’m trying to get him to apply to the Compass BioTek internship program with me,” she added. “Is it okay if I give Kilroy your info so his mom can text you?”

“Sure.” I’d met her when she dropped Kilroy off for Wes’ birthday party.

We finished getting ready.

I looked at my phone. “They’re almost here.”
