“Whatever we want,” I told her. “Basically, it’s a ceremony followed by a party. But it can be big or small, at your house or a fancy hotel. Sometimes they’re even elsewhere. Bren and Jett got married at one of Bren's hotels, and we flew there. It was an entire week. But if you own fancy hotels, why not?”

“He owns hotels? For some reason I thought he owned buildings,” Grace said.

“His mom does. He has luxury hotels,” Wes replied, finishing his chicken. “We could get married at one of them. Or we could take a trip there after. Lots of people go on a trip.”

“Wes and I rented a little cabin for two weeks–on this lake, actually.” It was really nice. We both had finished with the military. I was about to finish my social work program, and Wes would start his new job with Spencer. I’d been serving a longerterm in the military than Wes, but I’d started much earlier, given I was older.

Grace’s face lit up. “Where do you want to get married?”

“Brennan might buy this old estate nearby to use as an event venue. It would be nice to get married in a rose garden.” As we finished eating, I showed her the pictures that Bren had sent me of the place, along with pictures I’d found of potential ideas for decor, food, and flowers.

“These are perfect,” Grace said as she finished her water.

“Can we have a band at the reception? The string stuff is nice. But I want to dance,” Wes said.

“Of course,” I laughed. “Anything else you want? It’s your wedding, too.”

“The whiskey fountain you sent me. But let’s use a better quality whiskey, because that was pale looking,” he added.

It was a champagne fountain.

“Sure.” Whiskey fountain, why not?

“Ooh, what about a giant cheese board,” Grace added. “One of those fancy ones that takes up an entire table.”

“And that thing you showed me with all the candy in the jars,” Wes said.

My heart swelled. We were talking aboutour wedding.

We paid our check, and Wes held out a hand to help Grace out of the booth, then me.

“I feel so much better,” Grace admitted, leaning into me.

“I’m glad.” I put an arm around her. “Let’s go for a walk and find that ice cream.”

Chapter Fifty-One

Grace

We drove down a tree-lined dirt driveway, snow on the ground. A beautiful blue lake came into view.

“The lake has hot springs in it. It’s not a warm lake by any stretch of the imagination, but it keeps it from freezing. We haven’t gotten the boat out of winter storage yet, though,” Evan told me. “We don’t have waterskis, but we have a tube we pull, and one of those inflatable water trampolines.”

“That sounds like a ton of fun for summer,” I told him.

The air inside the truck was heavy with their scents. I was pretty sure sex was a big part of my romantic birthday weekend plans. I was looking forward to it, especially if they finally let me be the filling.

“This afternoon, I thought it might be fun to go to the snow-tubing park,” Evan told me. “Another time we can ski.”

“That sounds fun. I’d love to learn to snowboard.”

“Ri would love you to snowboard with her,” Evan told me.

“Are we catching fish for our dinner?” I asked, trying to get a better view of everything. It was beautiful here, and I could see why they’d chosen this place for their honeymoon.

“We could for lunch tomorrow, as long as you’re a better angler than Wes.” Evan laughed.

“Hey!” Wes chuckled as a giant wooden house appeared. It was a fancy multi-story wood and brick structure with peaked roofs and balconies.
