Chapter 3
Robert pulledinto Brooke’s driveway Friday night and tried to remember everything that Chase had told him the previous night when he’d picked up a suit. He adjusted the jacket and made sure that his tie was straight before walking up onto the front porch of the pretty blue-and-white Colonialhouse.
He rang the doorbell and tried to quell hisnerves.
Brooke opened the door and he suddenly couldn’t breathe. Her red, off the shoulder dress hugged her slender curves and ended just above her knees. He followed her killer legs down to the sexy, matching sling-back heels she wore. Her smile almost made him drop to his knees and he would’ve given anything for a taste of herlips.
“Hello,Superman.”
The way her eyes danced told Robert that she knew what kind of effect she was having onhim.
He surprised himself by saying, “Hello, gorgeous. You lookincredible.”
“Thank you. Come in. I just have to feed Buster and grab my purse,” she said, stepping back from thedoor.
Robert walked into the foyer and shut the door behind him. Brooke walked down a hall and disappeared into what he assumed was the kitchen. He followed her and found that his assumption wascorrect.
“I’m running a little late since I didn’t get out of work on time.” She rolled her eyes. “I rarely do. Sorry aboutthat.”
“No worries,” Robert said, watching her pour dry cat food in abowl.
A black and white tuxedo cat trotted into the kitchen and made a beeline for thefood.
“He’s cute,” Robertsaid.
“That one’s a hot mess. That’s what he is. Something happened when he came out of the womb,” Brookresponded.
Robert laughed. “That bad,huh?”
“You have no idea.” Brooke scratched Buster’s ears. “Behave, you littlemonster.”
At that moment, Robert would’ve gladly changed places with the cat. He’d love for Brooke to stroke him like that. He flushed and pulled his mind back from that line ofthinking.
Brooke straightened and picked up a red satin purse from the breakfast nook table. “Okay. Allset.”
“Great.”
He followed her back to the foyer and stepped out onto the porch. Once she’d locked the door, Robert offered her his arm. “Shall we,madam?”
* * *
Brooke tookhis arm and said, “Weshall.”
She was surprised when he walked her around to the passenger side of his SUV and opened the door for her. She’d had to prompt the last schmuck she’d gone out with to act like a gentleman. Not so with Robert. Not only did he open the door for her, he even handed her into the car like men had in oldendays.
As he walked around in front of the car on his way to the driver’s side, she admired the suave, distinguished picture he made in the tailored suit. It showed off his broad shoulders and trim waist and brought out his eyes. The man is too delicious. I can’t figure out why he’s stillsingle.
Robert got behind the wheel and reached across her. Brooke’s eyes widened and her pulse quickened because she thought that he was going to kiss her. His suit jacket brushed her shoulder and his spicy aftershave titillated her senses. In a moment, he pulled back and clicked her seatbelt intoplace.
“Safetyfirst.”
Following the way his lips moved when he smiled, Brooke wondered how a man could make such an ordinary statement seem seductive. Maybe it was the appreciation in his eyes or the slightly deeper timber to his voice. She didn’t know, but Brooke wouldn’t have objected if he had kissed her rightthen.
However, he turned to grab his own seatbelt and Brooke took a tiny breath to calm herself. “Thankyou.”
“You’re welcome.” As he backed out of her driveway onto the street, he said, “I’m sorry about the way it smells inhere.”
Brooke looked around the spotless interior and sniffed. “What do you mean? It smellsnice.”
