“Everyone, outside!” I roar the command to any Elites within hearing distance. I grab one of my injured, helping them stand as we make our way to the courtyard.
“Thank you, Alpha,” He croaks as I place him against the wall. “I have failed you, I’m sorry.”
“You have not failed me, you fought well to protect our home.” I squeeze his shoulder in reassurance.
“Where is Maize?” I hear a guard shout, holding one of my men by the throat. “Where is the witch!” When my warrior says nothing, a blade is stabbed in his stomach before I can get to him.
Fuck, they must have realized Maize is not here.
Magic attacks continue on the keep, trying to get into the building itself and I growl, looking in the direction it’s coming from.
“Wolf!” Someone screams as I spot them running away from Drax. Only, he crashes into a witch who’s just about to aim her magic.
It flies out of her hand and hits the top of one of our towers with a mighty crash.
A few seconds, then one more, and the brick begins to tumble down.
“Move!” I order my men below as I start rushing toward them. It’s then that I notice Maverick is also there.
But he’s locked in a battle with a guard while another wolf is with a rogure. There are two injured on the ground behind them that they are protecting.
I see the roof collapse and it follows the bricks down.
They are going to be crushed.
“Darius!” I hear Damian shout, but I’m nearly there.
Just as I’m a step away from being able to drag the guard to safety, the rogure spins unexpectedly, clamping his jaws down on my arm, and then we are under the rubble.

I flip through the pages of the old book, careful not to damage the pages as I read about the history of the lands.
Darius isn’t back yet after leaving for the keep, and half a day has gone by with no word. Leo assures me everything is fine, but a little while ago when we were talking, he stopped suddenly and said he would be right back.
He hasn’t been back since.
I sigh and lean back, looking out the window.
“He will be back soon,” Sarah says, a small smile on her face as she sorts out the cupboard of supplies.
We are in the healers cabin, and it looks pretty much like it used to, with a few added touches.
“I know what it’s like to miss someone, to need them near.” Her eyes go to Josh at the other end of the room as he looks through his own book. Their eyes meet, a softness in them as they look at each other.
I shift uncomfortably in my seat. “I know he will be okay, he always is.”
Damn Alpha seems invincible.
“Any more luck?” she asks, nodding to the book in my lap.
“Just that the Gods seem to favor the last place they created, though I don’t know where that is. It’s said that it was the last place they made after running around the lands. They would go there, raise their heads to the moon and howl a song that would bring life to everything around them.”
“That’s beautiful,” Sarah says with a faraway look in her eyes.
“The Gods are what made us, what gave us the lands, and along with that, its beauty.”
