My moonlight.

I’ve barely let her out of my sight since she woke up, but the thing is, when I do leave for a few moments, her eyes look for me, searching.

She’s just as needy for me as I am for her, and I’m not even ashamed of it.

I never thought I would ever see her eyes again, so I’m going to make sure they are on me for as long as I can.

She whimpers in her sleep, her hands clutching the pillow by her head and I lay down again for a moment, bringing her hand to my lips as I gently run them over her knuckles.

I feel her wolf there, and I let Drax come to greet her.

He’s desperate to meet her. Not only is Rhea the other half of me, but her wolf is also the other half of Drax.

A balance that’s needed to be kept, yet he’s missing his counterpart.

Rhea may hate me for the lengths I may have to go to get her wolf out, but now it is more urgent than ever knowing Charles saw me.

We are in more danger than we ever have been, I don’t think we are ready.

The burden lies heavy on my shoulders as I stroke Rhea’s cheek, moving down to the pulse in her neck to make sure it is beating.

The memory of it halting will forever haunt me.

I have to make sure she is safe, and then the ones she loves, along with my own men and the people.

The people are a burden the Highers are supposed to have, but it has been left on my shoulders to get us through with whatever is to come. To end the suffering and to make sure the right decisions are made, to make sure we train and are ready to face off against an enemy we never have before.

We don’t know all of the Higher’s powers, but what was showcased in The Deadlands may only be a snippet.

I fear what had happened to the rest of the crowd when we left, was no less than brutal.

Charles can be evil, but in anger? There are no words. But I had to get Rhea out of there, I couldn’t stay and protect them and I don’t regret that.

“We have news.”Leo says down the link, and I bend down, inhaling Rhea’s scent before I reluctantly move from the bed.

I guess the start of what’s coming has arrived.

Rhea’s brows crease, her hand reaching out for me as I move and I grab a pillow, running my cheek across it before gently laying it next to her. As soon as her hand touches it, she pulls it to her chest, burrowing her face in it so she has my scent.

I swallow roughly at her reaction, my heart beating almost painfully at how adorable she is, at the way she wants me.

With one last lingering look, I leave the room and pause outside the kid’s door. I hear nothing inside but gentle snores. Rhea said he’s a deep sleeper, but he doesn’t sleep much anymore according to the guards I have watching over him.

I quietly yank down the handle and open the door. He’s asleep in the bed, the furs tangled around him and sweat beads on his head.

I know he went through some shit at the Wolvorn, I know they hurt him and messed with his head, but I have no sympathy for those that hurt my little wolf.

Hurt people will hurt people, but that doesn’t mean we have to accept it.

He is a different case though, with his twisted memories and all, so for Rhea’s sake, I’m trying to be…cordial toward him. I’ll happily beat his ass when needed, but I can see the strain on Rhea’s face when tension thrums between us.

My jaw ticks and I leave the room, heading down the stairs. As soon as I’m out on the porch, I look to the moon and wait for my brothers.

I won’t go further than this to leave her right now, everything rebels at me even trying.

I lift my hand and Draxton comes out. He shakes his fur, leaning down to stretch himself out. I shake my head at him as he turns and puts his nose to my neck, greeting me.

I run my hand over his head, playing with the flames only he possesses. “You will meet her soon.” He huffs into my neck. “Go run, and then check the perimeter.”
