“You look happy.” He tilts his head in Millie’s direction.

“Happiest I’ve ever been,” I say, looking at my girl.

CHAPTER 48

MILLIE

Logan doesn’t say much on our way home from his father’s house in New Jersey. He’s quiet, but he’s also calm in a way I’ve never truly seen him. He holds my hand almost the entire way, fingers linked through mine, resting on my thigh.

“I’m so proud of you,” I say, smiling up at him in the elevator.

“Yeah?” He grins, gripping my waist and turning me so I’m facing him.

I nod. “Yeah. That was a huge moment, Logan. And I know it wasn’t easy. But you did it. And no matter what happens between you and your father, I think you did the right thing today.”

His smile is soft as he reaches up and gently tucks my hair behind my ear. “Thank you for being there with me.”

“I’ll always be there with you,” I whisper. “I’ve got you, remember?”

Wrapping his arms around me, Logan crushes me to his chest, holding me so tight, and I close my eyes, listening to the gentle thrum of his heart beating against his chest until the elevator chimes, announcing our arrival.

“Let’s go watch the sunset,” I say, grabbing his hand.

He unlocks the door, letting me enter first and following me closely.

I remove my coat and hang it by the hook on the front door. “Do you want a beer?”

“Yeah, baby,” he says, removing his jacket. “I’ll meet you out on the balcony.”

Assuming he needs to use the bathroom, I flash him a smile and head into the kitchen, taking two bottles of Bud from the fridge before heading out onto the balcony, in awe at the sight of the setting sun, the last of its rays shining over the city and the park, warm on my cheeks as I bask in the golden glow.

After a few moments, I feel a familiar warmth come up behind me, pressing against my back, Logan’s hands resting on the railing either side of me. His lips skate against the sensitive skin at the base of my neck, a kiss pressed to the pulse point making me sigh.

“I love you,” he murmurs against my skin.

Turning so I’m facing him, I look up at him, meeting his eyes, momentarily stilted at the way the sunshine refracts with hints of blue, silver, and gray. Craning up on my tip toes, I press my lips to his in a chaste kiss before pulling away and handing him his beer.

Holding my bottle up, I smile as I say, “To finally letting go of the past.”

He clicks the neck of his bottle with mine, leaning and resting our foreheads together with a knowing grin and a murmured, “To the best fucking future a guy could ever ask for.”

My cheeks flush, and I take a small sip of my beer, Logan doing the same. But then he grabs my bottle from my hands and places both of them onto the small patio table, turning back to me.

“I got you something.”

My eyes widen. “Me?”

He nods. And then, pulling something from behind him, heholds it up, and my mouth falls open at the sight of the New York Thunder jersey in my size, with the number fifty-two and his name printed on the back. “I want you to wear it to the game tomorrow night. I wanna see you sitting in the stands wearing my number, my name on your back. I wanna show you off. Because you’re my girl, Red, and I’m not willing to keep this a secret anymore.”

I take the jersey from him, holding it close. “Okay.”

He releases a breath like he was worried I might say no. Cupping my cheeks, he dips down, looking me in my eyes. “You and me, yeah?”

“Always,” I whisper with a smile before his lips press to mine.

At first, our kiss is sweet, gentle and tentative. But as I part my lips, Logan’s tongue slides inside my mouth, and I tangle with him, earning a throaty groan, his hands moving from my cheeks and around the back of my head, deepening the kiss.

I wrap my arms around his neck, moaning against his mouth, and he trails his fingers down my back, following the curve of my ass before lifting me off my feet with ease.
