“Gah, fine!” She pulled off her hoodie.
“We all look amazing,” I said as I pulled the duffel bag full of supplies out from beneath the coffee table.
“What if they’re watching us?” Emma said and pointed to one of the cameras Ace had installed.
“They were very excited about the game,” I said. “Pretty sure their full attention will be on that for the next couple of hours.”
“Okay…”
“Stop pointing at it though.” I grabbed her hand. “Seriously…this ring is gorgeous.”
“I know. I can’t stop smiling.”
“We’re going to look like very happy thieves then.” I heaved the duffel bag over my shoulder and we all walked out.
“Isn’t it suspicious that we’re all walking around like this?” Emma asked. “I feel like we should all be wearing hoodies right now.”
“It’s fine. The whole town is probably inside watching the game…” my voice trailed off as we passed an older woman walking her dog. Okay, maybe Emma had a good point. Hopefully the woman just thought we were going to a Halloween party that had been postponed or something. “But it doesn’t matter if we get caught, remember?”
“Right,” Emma said as she nervously watched the old woman over her shoulder.
“People probably just think Zoey is visiting one of her clients for a late night booty call,” Kebe said.
I laughed. “Yeah, probably.” I needed to put that rumor to bed and this probably wasn’t helping.
“I feel like we should have waited until later,” Emma said. “I know it’s dark, but people are still going out to dinner and stuff.”
Shit, she was right. Main Street wasn’t as dead as my street. And who went to a postponed Halloween party on a random Thursday night? This was suspicious as hell. “We’ll go the back way. Follow me.”
We went down a side street and walked the length of Main Street before turning back onto it. We stopped at the corner of the bank and peered around toward the entrance.
“There’s literally people across the street,” Emma said.
“Give it a second,” I said. “They’re about to go into that Italian restaurant…see. Done. Coast is clear.”
“Someone could walk out of the restaurant at any second.”
“Then we better hurry.” I rounded the corner and sprinted up the steps of the bank. I pulled out Ace’s keychain and started trying different keys.
Emma groaned. “There’s a freaking spotlight above our heads. Hurry!”
“I don’t know which key it is,” I said as I shoved another one into the lock. This one didn’t turn either.Shit.
“We’re going to get caught,” Emma said.
I tried another key. Why did Ace have so many keys?! Crap, I was pretty sure I’d just tried the key to my house. The one to the bank would look different, right? Maybe this gold one? I slid it into the lock but that one didn’t work either.
“I’ve got this,” Kebe said. She grabbed the keychain from me and whispered something under her breath as Emma started fidgeting.
“We’re going to get caught!” Emma hissed again.
Kebe was probably whispering curses at Emma to calm the fuck down.
“Shh,” I said. “Take a deep breath.”
“Someone just walked out of the restaurant.” She pointed across the street.
“Just act cool.” I pushed her arm down.
