They turned and walked out of the coffee shop. They hadn’t even ordered any coffee. They’d just come in to try to embarrass me in front of the whole town. Which was odd, because Otto didn’t want anyone in town to know we were dating. This was all so confusing. And what did they mean by ‘see you later?’ Because I was totally down with seeing them again.

I walked back over to Emma. “Sorry about that,” I said and sat back down.

Our fresh coffee had been left on our table. And Emma was already halfway done her new cup. Emma watched the twins as they left the coffee shop.

I really didn’t want her to bring them up again. I couldn’t stand the way she said they weren’t human. I cleared my throat as I poured a little alcohol from my flask into her coffee. I tried to focus even though part of me wanted to pull Huxley and Ace into the restroom. “So what were we talking about? Vampires? Right.”

“We really don’t need to talk about this anymore.”

“Well, I’m here you know. If you ever do want to talk more about changing into a vampire. Or if you need to talk about anything at all.” I was relieved that’s what was bothering her. Selfishly, I was mostly relieved it was still an issue because I didn’t want her to be a vampire. I didn’t want to be scared of her too. I shook the thought away. I wasn’t scared of Callum anymore. Everything was fine.

“I can talk to you about anything at all?” Emma asked.“Anything?”

“Of course.”

She nodded. And then she downed the rest of her coffee.

Finally. Loose lips time!We were getting somewhere.

“I know Otto sneaks into the house every night. Or at least…I think it’s Otto. Maybe it’s one of the twins. Or both? Or all three?” She kept looking more concerned the longer she spoke.

“It’s Otto. And I know that Callum sneaks in most nights when you’re at my house.”

She laughed. “I know, but…you’re being careful right?”

“Yes. Do you use condoms with Callum?”

“That’s a random question.”

Why was that a random question? She’d just brought up being safe.

“Do you know when Bennett is going to be back in town?” she asked. “I really need to talk to him.”

“I didn’t realize he was out of town.”

“Yeah, he’s away on some deal or something. I don’t know. I stopped by the bank this morning and Ace was really vague about it.”

“Why do you want to talk to Bennett? Doesn’t Callum hate when you talk to the big bad boys at the bank?”

She laughed. “Yes. So if you see Bennett can you please tell him I need to speak with him? It’s a matter of life and death,Zoey.”

Emma was being so dramatic right now. But for some reason the way she said it made me shiver. Probably because she’d emphasized my name. Like she thought I was the one in danger.

Chapter 16

Monday

Zoey

Otto had been coming over every night around 10 o’clock. But 10 had come and gone. And he hadn’t answered my text.

I would have texted him again, but I didn’t want to seem desperate.

Although…I was a little desperate. Emma was spending the night at Callum’s. I think now that she knew that I knew he was sneaking in every night anyway…there was no reason to hide it.

But I was worried about her spending all night alone with him. At least if she started screaming here I could barge into my guest room and throw garlic powder all over Callum. If she screamed tonight….no one would be there to help her.

I shook the thought away. She’d be okay. I wrapped my robe tighter around myself as the rain pelted my window. I think I was just a little freaked out to be home alone. Emma had only been living with me for a little while, but I’d already grown used to her being down the hall. And I’d gotten used to Otto visiting me every night.
