"Go get Mars."
Those were the only words that Ares breathed toward me.
"What?"
"Get.Him."
Ares was Boiling with fury. He ground his teeth and clenched his jaw so tight it hurt.
Without another thought or word, Ares took another step toward me, and something told me to run…. I did.
Ares didn't chase after me as I ran out of the apartment and down the hall toward the stairs instead of the elevator.
Once I got to Mars's door, the need to look behind me overpowered my being, and I did. At the stairs door, Ares stood there like he would devour me whole for making it here.
The pounding on the door ran from my fist to my chest, tying my stomach in illicit knots.
"Mars! Mars!"
I yelled out, not caring about the neighbors. Tears ran down my face because something in the air shifted as he ran toward me with purpose in his eyes.
I didn't recognize this person, and I'd never seen him before, but now, he was here.
Ares stopped in front of me as I faced him with my back against the door again, waiting for the knight to rescue me, but he wasn't there. Instead, I was left with the dragon that the knight didn't slay.
I stood there like a fool until he ate up the space between us. My heart pounded hard as he finally stopped before me, inches from my face.
He ran a finger through my hair and formed a fist gripping it tightly. Ares jerked my head up, causing the pain to travel through my body to my toes.
"Mars!" I yelled out but to no avail.
"What?" Ares barked in the answer, then flipped me with my back facing him.
"Ares, let me go."
My words whispered into the chilly open hall as the side of my face became intimate with the cold door.
"You don't understand," he shook his head.
"What don't I understand, Ares?"
Ares smirked as he leaned lower to my ear. His lips brushed my ear, raising goosebumps across my skin.
"I want to take you apart. Break you until there's nothing left."
He reached out and bracketed my waist, rubbing the arc of my hip bone with his thumb.
"You, yo—, yo—, you need to let me go. Please." I begged with tears.
"Listen to me," he said, emphasizing each of the last three words.
"Something isn't right here, Pretty girl, because I want to bury myself inside you and fuck you until someone fucking sedates me. Hurting you until everything around you is me. I want to embed myself inside your person to the point that you become me. Another fucking god walking around hellbent on destruction. I want to turn you fucking inside out, Goldilocks."
He spat the words out through gritted teeth. Frustration and disdain were wrapped up in his instruction.
"Fuck you, Ares."
I swore to shut my eyes tight, tasting the bitter words. Their immediate heat burned my tongue, and I worked my mouth to savor their rough, jagged edges. I was upset because I was both turned on and scared out of my mind.
