“Great. Can’t wait.”

My phone buzzes with a text from a number I don’t know. My stomach flips when I read the message.

You missed out on a great slumber party. And I made my famous French toast for breakfast. Your loss.

It’s from Grant. I guess I was wrong about him waiting a few days.

“You still there, Whit?”

Oh yeah, Emme’s on the phone. I was distracted by Grant’s message.

“Sorry I was just reading a text.”

“How are you doing with everything else?” she asks. “Since things ended with Pete?”

Wow. That feels like a million years ago.

“I’m good,” I tell her. “I actually ran into him, and I think he wanted to talk things out.”

“And you said no?”

“Yep. I’ve moved on.” I bite my lower lip and reread Grant’s text.

“You’ve met someone else.”

I hesitate. “I think so. It’s kind of complicated.”

“Complicated, how?” she asks.

I explain how I met Grant and that Macy has been trying to set me up with Chad.

“I’m sure she’ll be thrilled about you and her brother,” she says.

Maybe. But she didn’t try to set me up with him, so I don’t know.

“Honestly, I couldn’t stand Grant when I first met him. Chad’s probably more my type.”

“Possibly, but are you interested in Chad?”

I sit down on a bench as busy shoppers rush by me.

“He’s really funny and nice,” I tell her.

“I’m sure he is,” she says. “But it sounds like you’re trying to talk yourself into dating him.”

That’s exactly what I’m doing. Although I think I could date Chad if there was no Grant.

“Anyway, I have to finish shopping,” I say. “Let me know if you get Bill a present.”

“Good luck with your situation.”

After I end the call, I click on Grant’s text and start typing a response.

You cook? I figured you were a coffee and protein shake kind of guy.

I chew on my fingernail while I wait for a response.

That’s accurate most days.
