“At least you tried,” I remind him.

“You guys are so lazy,” Macy says. “Let’s go drive around and look at Christmas light displays.”

They all groan.

“I’ll go with you,” I say eagerly. “And then I’ll probably head home.”

Admittedly, I want to escape the awkwardness of being here with both Chad and Grant. But I also want to talk to Macy.

Chad stands up. “I’ll probably head home too.”

He walks over to me and puts his arm around my shoulders. “Can we talk for a second?” he whispers.

“Sure.”

We head out of the room, and I can almost feel everyone’s eyes following in our direction, including Grant’s.

“I just wanted to thank you for being so cool about tonight,” he says.

“Of course.”

“And I wanted to ask if you’d like to get dinner this week.”

Ugh. I really do like Chad, and I don’t want to hurt his feelings. At the same time, I can’t deny I’m attracted to Grant.

“Sure. Text me, and we’ll figure something out.”

He inches closer to me, and I can feel my body tense up. Thankfully, he only kisses me on the cheek.

He yells good-bye to the others, and then he’s gone.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

When I return to the living room, Grant has stretched out and placed his feet on the large ottoman. There’s a part of me that would love to curl up next to him.

He doesn’t look up from his phone, and his words replay in my mind. He made it clear he will not be second choice to Chad.

“What did Chad have to say?” Macy sings. “Did he finally kiss you?”

My stomach drops as a wistful smile appears on Grant’s face. No doubt he’s basking in the fact he kissed me before Chad.

“No, he didn’t kiss me,” I clarify.

She frowns. “Wow. He’s really taking his time.”

I sit down and fold my legs under me.

“Has he said anything to you?” she asks Austin.

“Babe, relax,” he pleads. “If something is meant to happen between them, it will.”

“Maybe they aren’t compatible,” Grant suggests.

The three of us look at him.

“You don’t think anyone is compatible with Chad,” Austin says, letting out a yawn.

“True,” Grant says with a nod.
