A faint smile appears on his face. “Thanks. I’ve tried to tell her that, but she has her doubts.”

I’m about to say something about his mother when Chad joins us in the kitchen.

“There you are,” he says placing his hand on my lower back. He shoots a glance at Grant.

“What’s up, Grant?”

Grant’s eyes drop to Chad’s hand on my back, and a confused expression appears on his face.

“Not much, just enjoying the party.”

Chad smirks. “Yeah, sure. Whitney, this is Macy’s brother.”

“We’ve met,” Grant replies.

The three of us grow quiet, and admittedly, it’s kind of awkward.

“So how long has everyone known each other?” I ask, trying to break the ice.

Chad looks at Grant.

“Let’s see, Austin and Macy have been married about three years. So maybe a little longer than that?”

Grant nods and takes another sip of his drink. “Sounds about right.”

“How long have you and Austin been friends?” I ask Chad.

He flashes me a grin. “Since high school—so practically a lifetime.”

“Aww, that’s great you’ve stayed close.”

“Yes. He’s one of my best friends.”

“Grant, you made it.” Macy squeals, rushing over to us. “Yay.”

She throws her arms around her brother. He returns her hug, and for the first time I notice some emotion from him.

“Thank you for coming,” Macy says.

“You’re welcome.”

“And you’re socializing,” she teases. “This is the best Christmas present you could give me.”

He rolls his eyes.

Chad hasn’t removed his hand from my lower back, and I don’t mind at all.

Austin joins us and gives Grant one of those handshake/man hugs, and Grant hugs him back.

I can tell Grant likes his brother-in-law. Of course, it’s possible Macy and Austin might be the only people he likes.

“Please add an ornament to my tree,” Macy begs Grant. “Please, please, please.” She clasps her hands in prayer position.

Grant lets out a sigh.

“A good brother would do that,” I add pointedly.

“Exactly,” Macy says.
