“I’m always nice.”

I snort. “Very funny.”

Chad looks in my direction, gives a slight wave, and I wave back.

“When can I go to Macy’s office?” Grant whines.

“Whenever you want, just as long as you kiss me at midnight.”

He smiles and wraps his hands around my waist. “That’s the only part of the night I’m looking forward to.”

He makes a quick escape while I wander around and say hello to other guests. Macy’s Christmas tree is still sparkling, adding the perfect ambiance to the room.

“Whitney,” a voice calls. I turn around to see Janelle waving to me. I was thrilled when Macy told me she invited Janelle and Brian. It wouldn’t have felt right to ring in the new year without my best friend.

“You look gorgeous,” she exclaims.

I’m wearing a black strapless jumpsuit with my tallest pair of stiletto heels. I probably need to invest in more shoes with heels now that I’m with Grant.

“So do you.”

Janelle looks stunning in a black maxi dress, her hair piled up on top of her head.

“Where’s Grant?” Brian asks.

I point in the direction of the office. “He’s taking a break from the party in Macy’s office.”

Janelle laughs. “That didn’t take long.”

“Yes, he and Macy already argued over a pinkHappy New Yearhat.”

“Janelle, Brian, hi,” Macy squeals in excitement. She gives them both hugs. “Congrats on your engagement. Let’s see the ring.”

“Congratulations to you too,” Janelle says pointing to her stomach.

Macy gently touches her belly before looking around.

“Where is my brother? He better not have left.”

“He’s taking a few minutes to himself,” I assure her.

She rolls her eyes. “What are we going to do with him?”

Macy moves on to visit with more friends, while Janelle, Brian, and I get a drink.

“I see that Chad’s here,” Janelle whispers. “Have you spoken with him?”

I shake my head. “Nope, we just waved. But he brought a date with him, so that’s good.”

“The awkwardness will fade each time you see each other,” she says. “I’m sure his ego is a bit bruised because you picked Grant over him.”

I nod. “I know.”

Just then Macy announces that it’s time to take a group photo. I excuse myself to get Grant.

When I get to the office, I find him looking at some photos.

“You’re not working,” I exclaim, trying to hide my surprise.
