“Yes. I can’t wait to see my dad and the rest of the family.”

He lets out a sigh. “You get to show me off again today. I’m starting to feel like I’m just here as arm candy.”

I giggle. “Yes, I’m sure my aunts will adore you just like Mom did.”

“I mean, can you blame them?”

I roll my eyes. “You really should work on your confidence a bit.”

His phone rings from the counter, so he gets up to grab it.

“It’s Macy on FaceTime,” he whines. “Why does she always insist on talking over video? What if I was indecent?”

“Morning, Mace,” he says, plastering a smile on his face.

“Merrrry Christmas to my wonderful brother,” she shouts. “You’re on FaceTime, and the whole family is here. Say hi, everyone.”

“Hi,” a chorus of people shout in the background.

“Hey,” Grant replies through his teeth.

“Be nice,” I mouth.

“Whitney’s here too.” He turns the camera around to face me, and all the sudden I’m looking at least twenty-five people. I suddenly remember I’m wearing no makeup and my hair is a mess.

I wave awkwardly to Austin’s huge family.

“Ohhhh,” Macy sings. “Merry Christmas, Whitney. I’m so glad you’re together this morning.”

“Yes, Grant just made me hisfamousFrench toast.”

She touches her hand to her heart and tenderness glows in her eyes.

“Hey, guys,” Austin says appearing on the screen. “We wanted to call you and include you in some exciting news.”

I look at Grant and raise my eyebrows.

“Grant, you’re going to be an uncle.” Macy shouts.

I gasp and cover my mouth as I watch Grant’s expression.

Austin’s family goes wild when Macy holds up a sonogram photo to show us.

“That’s amazing,” I squeal. “Congratulations.”

Grant smiles and nods. He’s obviously trying to keep his composure in front of the crowd of people. “Yes, congrats. I’m so happy for you both.”

I can’t imagine any better news for their family. A new life after so much loss must be one of the most heartwarming events to anticipate. They deserve this joy.

“Our little one will be joining us in the summer,” Macy announces.

“This is the best news,” I gush.

Macy starts moving, and suddenly she’s in a quiet room.

“I love that you’re spending Christmas morning together,” she says. “Did Grant give you the presents?”

“Yes, thank you for the trip, and I’m obsessed with the ornament. I did the ugly cry after opening it.”
