“I knew it,” he says ignoring my pleading. “I told you she wouldn’t want her friend to be with me.”
Macy rises to her feet. “You’re putting words in my mouth, Grant. I’m not going to sit here and listen to this.”
She walks out of the room leaving me speechless. Grant picks up a pillow and twists it in his hands.
“You should probably go talk to her.”
He shakes his head. “It will only make things worse. We both need to calm down.”
I put my face in my hands. A second later I feel Grant’s hand on my back and then his chin on my shoulder.
“I’m so sorry,” he whispers.
I shake my head. “I should’ve told her I wasn’t interested in Chad as soon as I realized I was attracted to you. I dragged it out way too long.”
“I didn’t have to react like I did,” he says, wrapping his arms around me.
“I’m going to check on her.”
I hurry up the stairs in search of Macy. I call her name and find her laying on her bed.
“Hey. Can we talk?”
“I’m sorry,” she says sitting up. She blows her nose and folds her legs under her.
“You don’t owe me an apology,” I say. “I had a feeling you weren’t going to take this news well.”
She holds up her hand. “It’s not that. I’m just surprised.”
“It’s okay to be worried about your brother,” I tell her.
“And you,” she adds. “Grant is stubborn, moody, and sometimes he’s impossible.”
“I know,” I say letting out a sigh. “I tried to fight my feelings—obviously, I failed.”
“And you haven’t been out of a relationship for very long,” she reminds me.
“You’re right.
She bites her lower lip. “Please believe me, I’d love more than anything for this to work. I want my brother to be happy, and I adore you.”
“I feel so terrible about Chad,” I tell her. “I’ve been avoiding him because we wanted to talk to you first.”
“Normally I say he’d understand but when he finds out about you and Grant…” She cringes.
“Probably a big ego blow, huh?”
She nods. “Some people just don’t mesh well. Those two have never liked each other.”
“I just don’t want this to interfere with our friendship,” I tell her.
“Of course not. We won’t let it,” she insists.
“Do you want to talk to Grant?” I ask.
She shakes her head. “We both need time. This isn’t our first argument, and it won’t be our last.”
I give Macy a hug and head back downstairs.
