Macy is wearing a sexy version of Mrs. Claus’s dress.
“Hi. I love your outfit,” I say. She gives me a hug and air kisses. I begin the introductions, and she and Janelle immediately start talking like they’ve known each other for years. I’m sure the group chat has helped even though Janelle would never admit it.
Chad shows up a minute later and greets everyone. I immediately introduce him to Janelle and Brian. I know Janelle is sizing him up, but she doesn’t make it obvious. He looks good in his zipped-up navy blue jacket, jeans, and his glasses.
We’re all changing into our skates when “All I Want for Christmas” begins to play over the loudspeaker. Almost everyone in the rink begins to sing along with the tune.
“Are you ready?” I ask Chad, who looks like he might faint.
“Not even a little,” he admits. “This was a brilliant idea, Macy.”
She laughs and gives him a wave before taking off on the ice like she’s competing in the Olympics.
“You can go ahead and start,” he tells me. “It might take me a few minutes to get acclimated.”
“Are you sure?” I ask.
“Very sure.”
“Okay, see you out there.”
The lights are flashing along with the music. I catch up with my friends, and we all sing along with Mariah Carey.
As we make our way around, I see poor Chad on the wall. He’s trying so hard to get out on the ice, and I feel bad. I slow down and skate up to him.
“How’s it going?”
“Great,” he says giving me a thumbs up. “Just keep going. I’m getting there, I promise.”
Austin and Macy skate over to us, and Austin begins teasing him.
“Hey, man, I may not be able to skate, but I’m better at golf and soccer than you are,” Chad exclaims.
Austin makes a face. “You wish, bro.”
“We’ll leave you two to figure it out,” Macy says, linking her arm with mine as we take off on the ice.
“I heard you went to a show with Chad the other night. How was it?”
Here we go. I knew there would be questions tonight, and I’m ready for this one.
“It was a lot of fun.”
“Excellent,” she says as we approach Janelle and Brian who have been doing couple skate all night.
I reach and grab Janelle’s hand, pulling her away from Brian.
“I was just asking Whitney about her evening with Chad,” Macy shouts. “What do you think of him?”
Janelle smiles. “All that matters is that she’s happy with whoever she ends up with.”
I give her a stern look. I know what she’s implying, but I can recall a time or two when she shared a random kiss with an attractive man.
We begin to approach the spot where we left Chad and Austin. Although poor Chad is now sitting on the ice.
“Oh no,” I call. “Are you alright?”
“He’s hopeless,” Austin announces, laughing.
