I try to hide my surprise.

“Yes.”

“I knew it,” she exclaims. “Macy said you were a tiny thing and absolutely gorgeous.” She pulls me into a hug. She’s wearing black stilettos which make her even taller. Is everyone in Macy’s life super tall?

“Let’s go find Macy and meet everyone.” She links her arm in mine and leads me into the house.

We walk into an enormous living room with extraordinarily high ceilings. Two men on ladders are adjusting a gigantic Christmas tree. There are several boxes and plastic bins of ornaments and decorations stacked up. Macy is shouting instructions to the men. She’s wearing black leather pants and a red halter top. Her blonde hair is pulled up into a sleek ponytail.

“Whitney, hi,” Macy exclaims as soon as she sees me. She motions for me to join her. A blonde guy who looks like he used to adorn the walls of Abercrombie and Fitch climbs down from the ladder.

“Austin, this is my holiday soul sister, Whitney,” she announces. “When we picked out the same throw pillows, I knew we were meant to be friends.”

He smiles. “Of course. Throw pillows are very essence of true friendship.”

I giggle. “Oh, Macy, he’s a good one.”

She kisses Austin on the cheek.

“Great to meet you, Whitney.”

“You as well.” I shake Austin’s hand.

“If you’ll excuse me, my beautiful wife has put me to work.”

“We can’t wait for you to meet Chad,” she whispers as soon as Austin walks away. She points up to the other ladder.

I’m assuming Chad is Austin’s single friend she’s been referring too in her text messages.

“Looks great, Chad,” she shouts.

He climbs down and hops off the ladder.

“This is my friendWhitney,” she sings, emphasizing my name.

Chad raises his eyebrows, a broad smile spreading across his face, revealing a dimple in his right cheek.

“Hello, Whitney.”

Chad is cute—he has warm hazel eyes and wavy dark brown hair. He’s wearing a navy V-neck sweater and dark blue jeans. I’m already happy about my decision to come tonight.

“Chad is a dentist, and he likes sports and classic cars,” Macy says holding up her hand.

“And long walks on the beach and good conversation,” he adds with an eye roll. “Thanks for making it more awkward, Macy.”

I laugh. “I enjoy long walks and conversation too.”

“Whew, I’m glad to hear it,” he exclaims.

“I’ll let you two chat while I check on everyone, and then we’ll do more introductions.” She dances away, clearly proud of her attempts at matchmaking.

“Her heart is in the right place,” he tells me.

“Oh, I know,” I say with a giggle.

“Would you like something to drink?” he asks.

“That’d be great.”
