“The pizza is here,” Caroline calls.

Everyone starts to make their way downstairs, including Leslie. She’s visibly angry, but keeps her mouth shut. Maybe she’s holding to her end of our agreement after all.

Tyler and I linger at the top of the stairs.

“Nice job,” I say. “Is there anything you aren’t good at?”

He pretends to think about it. “No.”

I roll my eyes.

“Wait, yes. I’m very disorganized.”

“Really? Organization is one of my biggest strengths.”

I actually get really excited about organizing things. Does that make me a big nerd? Honestly, I couldn’t care less because it makes me happy.

“So, you’re saying you could come to my apartment and help me organize my life?”

I wait for him to smirk or laugh, but I think he’s being totally serious.

“Are you inviting me over?” I ask.

“Yes”—he pauses—“does that work for you?”

I open my mouth to say something, when Caroline calls my name.

“Um, yeah, it works for me.”

“Good.” His eyes linger on mine as he slides closer to me, and for a second I think he’s going to pick up where he left off in the parking lot and I’m okay with that.

“Tori?” Caroline calls again.

Crap.

“I guess we should join the group,” I say, my voice cracking. We haven’t taken our eyes off each other.

“Yeah, probably,” he replies without making any attempt to leave.

“Tyler, don’t you want your free pizza?” Matt shouts.

He sighs deeply and leans over to whisper in my ear, “I really want to finish this conversation later.”

I nod without saying a word.

Tyler heads down the stairs ahead of me. I exhale the breath I was holding and trail behind.

As soon as I walk into the kitchen, I feel the tension in the air. I think back to the first night I met everyone at the kickoff party. There was an overwhelming amount of excitement and hope. Of course, no one expected the Christian and Erica split to happen right before the wedding.

“Did you all get your room information from the planners?” Erica asks, wiping the corner of her mouth. She’s only taken one small bite of her pizza. Everyone tells her that they’ve received the info.

“Does anyone have anything good to share? Any exciting news?” Clint asks. He’s definitely someone who observes from the background and is very good at shifting the focus to positive things.

“Well, I have some news,” I announce.

“Oh, tell us,” Caroline exclaims.

I tell them about being promoted to the director of sales.
