She leans her head to the side. “Tori, are you doubting my ability to get information?”
I snort. “Never.”
To her credit, I’ve also heard the buzz about the announcement coming. It’s nearly impossible to ignore Shannon’s nonstop chatter about it. I can’t begin to imagine what office life is going to be like if she isn’t chosen. Or if she is. It’s basically a no-win situation all around.
I glance at my phone. The bridesmaid group chat has been radio silent since the shower, and I’m sure Erica is still reeling from the heartbreaking news she just received. I don’t know Erica well enough to know how long she’ll be out of commission. There’s still a bachelorette party on the schedule before the big day, and she’s hosting it. The one thing I’m sure of is that Erica isn’t the type to drop the ball on something like that, so I’m expecting it to still happen.
I scroll through my texts and find the last message I received from Tyler. I pause for a few seconds and then start typing.
Hey. Checking in. Caroline is a mess. How’s Andy?
I click send without hesitation.
I’m not sure what I’m doing, but I need a distraction.
My phone buzzes immediately.
Hey. I was planning to message you today. You must’ve read my mind.
My pulse picks up.
Sure you were.
“What are you smiling about?” Parker sings.
“A text from myfriendTyler.”
She gives me a smug smirk. “Friend? Yeah, sure. I called that one.”
“Ha-ha. We’re texting about Caroline and Andy. The secret about the best man cheating on the maid of honor is out—well, part of it.”
I tell her that Erica found out Christian was cheating except she still doesn’t know about Rachel.
“It was going to come out eventually,” she replies. “There’s no way he could keep his lies going forever. He was going to miss a step somewhere.”
“I know. I feel bad for everyone involved. I kind of wish it hadn’t happened until after the wedding, for Caroline and Andy’s sake. They’re now stuck in the middle.”
My phone buzzes again.
Don’t you trust me by now? Especially after the other night?
My mind returns to that moment in the parking lot before Tyler and I were interrupted. Another text from him pops up.
I have a meeting with a client in five minutes. Let’s continue this later.
I place my phone down on my desk and exhale slowly. I should probably take a step back. I’m definitely drawn to Tyler, and although Caroline was hoping I’d connect with someone at her wedding, I’m not sure she expected it to be him.
We can get along, be friends, and be there for Caroline and Andy over the next few weeks. I especially need to be careful not to make any waves with Leslie, at least right now.
I force myself to push all thoughts of Tyler and the wedding saga aside and follow up on some new sales leads. I’m very fortunate to have a stable client base with great relationships, so that’s one aspect of my job that comes easy.
All of a sudden, an email pops up from Parker’s man, Spencer Brady. He asks me to meet with him around two o’clock, which gives me a nervous feeling in my stomach.
Is this it? Have they selected me to be the new director of sales? I look around the office to see if any of my co-workers are reacting to a similar email? All is quiet so far.
I send a quick reply to Spencer and don’t say a word to anyone. If I tell Parker, I know she’ll make a big deal out of it, and I haven’t been offered the position yet. I need to be prepared either way. Am I ready to take the next step? Or should I stay safe and content exactly where I am?
