“And you’re cute when you’re annoyed with me.”
My heart picks up speed as he continues to compliment me.
“Well, I must be really cute then,” I reply nervously.
He laughs. “Very.”
Tyler’s eyes lock on mine, causing a stir I haven’t felt in a while. There’s definitely a vibe between us that I can’t quite explain. After our first meeting I convinced myself he was obnoxious and conceited. He might still have a high opinion of himself, but he’s proving to be nicer than I thought. He’s also a lot of fun to be around and he gets me out of my comfort zone, which doesn’t happen often.
“Okay, I admit you’re not as bad as I first thought you were,” I say with an eye roll.
He opens his mouth in shock. “You’re starting to like me. It was only a matter of time.”
“The jury is still out.”
“Fair enough.” He glances at his phone. “It’s been a long day. We should probably head back. You’re driving.”
I follow him back to the truck and hop into the front seat. I still can’t believe I’m driving this monster.
I breathe a sigh of relief as soon as we return to the restaurant after a close call of running over a curb. Luckily, there weren’t any little old ladies out this late.
“I did it. Sorry about the curb thing.”
He shrugs. “That’s one of the reasons to get a truck—you can drive over things and not damage it.”
“Good to know.” I open the door and jump down to the ground.
As I hand him my keys, our fingers touch, causing another jolt to shoot through me. I inhale sharply as I try to ignore it.
“Thanks for allowing me to drive Axel,” I say.
His eyes light up. “You called him by his name.”
I giggle. “Yes, but don’t get used it.”
“You liked driving him—I can tell,” he says, walking backwards alongside me toward my car.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I say defiantly.
When we reach my car, I open the door.
“Thanks for hanging out with me tonight,” he says, leaning his elbow on the door. “It was fun getting to know you better.”
“Thanks for inviting me.”
My balance shifts from one foot to another. Admittedly, there’s a part of me that’s not ready to get in my car and drive away yet.
Tyler starts to move closer to me just as my phone rings. My heart sinks when I see Caroline’s number.
“Oh, no,” I say, holding up my phone to show him.
He makes a face. “I’m guessing the secret’s out.”
“I need to answer this,” I say, putting the phone to my ear.
“Hey, Caroline.”
“Hi, Tori, we have a major crisis going on. Can you talk?”
