I ignore the increasing number of messages because I’m preparing to meet with Spencer Brady. He’s been out of the office all week, much to Parker’s dismay. He’s returning today, and we’re finally meeting to discuss the director position. Of course I still have mixed feelings about the possibility. It’s probably because I’m so comfortable and secure in my current position. I’m not sure I want to mess with a good thing. Like the old saying goes—don’t fix something that isn’t broken.

“Are you ready to meet with my man?” Parker asks, pulling me out of my thoughts.

Her man? She really has her heart set on Mr. Brady. I guess you never know, it could happen.

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” I say eagerly.

She checks her phone and reapplies her lip gloss. “Word on the street is that you’re their number one choice.”

I lean my head to the side. “Were you eavesdropping again?”

She shakes her head. “Not on purpose. I just happened to be walking by when Spencer was talking to Betsy from HR.”

That’s usually how it happens. Parker is a sleuth genius.

“You’re always in the right place at the right time,” I say. “How do you know you’re not on the list too? Maybe I should bring your name up when I’m meeting with him.”

Her eyes grow wide. “Yes, please do. But not for the director position.”

“So, you want me to use my meeting to play matchmaker?” I ask.

“Not the entire meeting,” she replies. “You need to use some of your master selling skills to sell yourself as the perfect person to take Steven’s job. I don’t think any of us will survive working for Shannon.”

I exhale. She’s right about that.

“And if I happen to come up, you could sing my praises just a bit.”

“You know I will,” I assure her. “I’ll even remind him that your zodiac signs are compatible.”

She covers her face with her hands. “Please don’t. I still haven’t gotten over that. Every time I look at my horoscope, I cringe.”

“Relax, I think it worked in your favor.”

Our conversation is interrupted by the sound of my phone ringing. If it has anything to do with Caroline’s wedding, I’m not answering.

I don’t recognize the number, so I let the call go to voicemail. I don’t need health insurance or an extended warranty for my car.

“Anyway, I’m off to my meeting,” I say, standing up from my chair. Parker jumps to her feet and throws her arms around me.

“You got this, Tori. Make me proud.”

“I’ll do my best, Mom,” I say.

She puts her hands in prayer position, and I shake my head as I make my way to Spencer’s office.

Spencer is on his phone when I arrive at his open office door. He waves me in as he types something on his laptop. I sit down in the chair across from his desk and look around. It’s still a bit strange that Steven is no longer here. I really hope retirement is treating him well, he deserves it.

“Sorry about that,” Spencer says, placing his phone down on the desk.

“Business first,” I say.

He leans back in his chair and clasps his hands together. “That’s what I like to hear.”

He begins our meeting by asking me about my experience at GFP and what my goals are moving forward. We discuss past sales, and then he tells me I’ve been recommended for the director position.

“That must’ve been Parker?” I say knowingly.
