“It’s nice to meet you, Parker. I’m an Aries.” He flashes her a warm smile. Okay, so either Spencer Brady has a good sense of humor, or he’s returning some of Parker’s interest. Maybe both.
After I introduce myself, my phone continues to buzz in my pocket. I’m sure it’s more important wedding info, but I ignore it. There’s no way I’m reading my texts during this meeting.
“Now that I have some names to go with faces, I’m going to turn the time over Steve for a few minutes,” Spencer says, sitting down in the empty chair next to Parker. Judging by the look on her face, you’d think she just won the lottery.
“It’s Steven,” Steven says, as he rises to his feet. He really hates when people call him Steve.
“Well, team, I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate all your efforts and hard work over the years. You’re an excellent group, with loads of talent.”
Parker finally moves, turning to me slightly, her eyes wide.
Is Steven doing what I think he’s doing?
“This being said, I will be leaving GFP and entering retirement. I look forward to long days of fishing, golf, and getting on my wife’s nerves.”
Wow. I know I shouldn’t be surprised, but I really thought he’d stick it out a bit longer.
No one says anything for a few seconds, so I step up to the plate.
“Congratulations, Steven. You will be greatly missed around here.”
Everyone else follows suit with well wishes and comments.
“Thank you, Tori. And everyone,” he pauses and looks at Spencer, who gives him a nod.
“With my announcement comes even more exciting news. The powers that be are looking for my replacement, and they want to do so from within the company. Spencer will be here over the next few weeks to observe and make necessary changes. I already informed him to look no further than right here. Any of you could fill my shoes and do it well. Possibly even better.”
I notice Shannon sit up straighter in her chair. Of course she wants his job—being the director of sales would boost her ego through the roof.
This gives me pause. Although I like my co-workers, I’m not sure I could see myself working for most of them—especially Shannon.
My phone buzzes again, so I finally peek at it. I have thirty-eight new messages. Seriously, do any of these women have jobs?
“I look forward to working with you all,” Spencer says, dragging my mind back to the meeting.
He waves and flashes another smile at Parker before walking out of the room with Steven.
“What just happened?” I ask, sliding my chair closer to Parker’s.
Shannon is talking a mile a minute to Bobby and Serena as they all stand up.
Parker opens her eyes widely. “I think I just met the man I’m going to marry.”
I roll my eyes. Well, that didn’t take her long. Never mind that our boss just retired and major changes are coming. She’s thinking about her future husband.
“I know you think I’m crazy,” she says knowingly.
“No, no—not at all,” I tease.
“I don’t know what it is, but when he walked into the office, something came over me.”
She dramatically drops her head on the table.
“I can’t believe I told him what my sign is. I swear it was completely involuntary.”
I giggle. “Yeah, it was funny. But I wouldn’t worry about it. He didn’t seem to mind when he told you his.”
“Yes, and he’s an Aries. We’re totally compatible.”
