He smiles. “Yes, she had a lot to say.”

“I’m sure she did. She’s a good friend and a great person.”

This is the perfect way to drop a few casual comments about Parker.

“She has great energy,” he exclaims, the corners of his mouth curling up.

Parker is going to be thrilled to hear this. She’s definitely made an impression on him. And his description of her was appropriate for a work meeting. I’m sure there are rules about what you can and can’t say about other employees.

“Oh, yes. She brings life to this office, and I believe we all have our roles in making this a good team environment.”

This is true for the most part. Although I’m not sure what Shannon’s role is, considering she usually puts theIin team.

“I agree. So, what do you think about the prospect of being the leader on this team?”

I exhale slowly as I think. I know it’s a step up and maybe that’s what I need. A new challenge? Almost like accelerating on that Jet Ski.

“It would be a great opportunity,” I admit. “I’ve just grown so comfortable in my position, and change can be difficult for me.”

He nods. “Understandable.”

“But to answer your question”—I pause for a few seconds—“I’m patient, fair, and motivated. I have a lot of knowledge about the company, and my sales numbers show I’m a hard worker. I believe these qualities make a good leader.”

“I agree.”

He picks up his pen and rolls it in his hand.

“Do you feel there’s anyone else on the team who would be a good fit?”

Hah. I wonder what he’d think if I tell him who Idon’tthink would make a good director.

I clear my throat. “I think everyone has strengths. Of course some people will be better motivators than others.”

I’m not the type of person to throw a co-worker under the bus. That wouldn’t say much about my character.

Spencer asks me a few more questions before I return to my desk. As soon as I walk down the hall, Parker practically pounces on me.

“How was it? What did he say?”

Shannon looks up from her desk.

“It was fine,” I reply.

Parker nods, realizing that Shannon has her ears wide open to hear all the information.

“Good. We should grab a quick lunch later,” she suggests.

“That works for me.”

I sit at my desk and open my laptop.

When I check my phone, there are forty-five messages waiting for me. I quickly scan and read all the reminder messages about the shower. The last few texts are from Erica regarding the bachelorette party.

Caroline is requesting a low-key evening for the bachelorette party.

We can have it at my house—wine, food, and fun.

Anyone else have any ideas?
