I’m about to say something, but Rachel continues talking. I’m not sure if it’s the alcohol or the fact that I’m neutral in this situation.
“Sometimes I think Erica is trying to live vicariously through Caroline,” she says. “She wants the big fancy wedding and all the attention that comes with it.”
I shrug my shoulders.
“I can see that, and Erica and Christian seem happy. I’m sure they aren’t far off from an engagement.”
Rachel’s expression completely changes. “Not everything is as perfect as it appears.”
“Never,” I say in agreement. “In fact sometimes they seem too good to be true.”
“Exactly.”
I give her a curious look. “Do you know something?”
Rachel opens her mouth and then closes it again.
“What?”
“Never mind, I don’t want to cause Caroline any distress before the wedding.”
I’m not going to push her any further. I already have a feeling she’s on the verge of telling me what’s going on, so I’ll let her do it in her own time.
I nod. “I understand. You’re a good friend.”
She gives me a weak smile. “So are you. I’m glad you’re here.”
“Me too,” I say. “Anyway, would you like to go explore the ship before dinner?”
“Sure. It’s probably time for me to get out of this cabin.”
For the first time since we’ve arrived, Rachel seems lighter.
We chat about life as we get ready. I change into a red strapless maxi dress and add curls to my hair.
“Hello,” Leslie calls, opening the door. She looks me up and down. “Ohhh, don’t you look fancy. Who are you all dressed up for?”
“Um, myself.”
“Mm-hmm …” she mumbles and switches her attention to Rachel. “Rach, you look pretty. I love that dress.”
Rachel is wearing an adorable, little, pink baby doll dress. It totally suits her petite frame and cute blonde hair.
“Thanks,” she says. “I’m ready to start enjoying this weekend.”
“It’s about time,” Leslie exclaims. “You can’t stay in this cabin the whole weekend.”
“I know. Tori said the same thing. She’s been talking to me for hours.”
“We’re going to explore the ship and get a drink before dinner. Would you like to join us?” I ask Leslie.
“Thanks for the invite, but I’m meeting up with Tyler. Sorry.” She flashes me a smug look as she pulls off her sundress and drops it on the ground. Leslie is definitely the messy one of the three of us. Her stuff is all over her bed and trickling down to the floor.
I pick up her dress and place it on her bed.
“We don’t need her,” Rachel whispers.
I couldn’t have said it better myself.
