“Do you think you got the job?” I whisper, after looking to make sure Shannon isn’t listening. She’s on the phone, talking so loudly you’d think she was the only person in the office.
“Probably not, since I told him you should be the one to get it.”
“Parker,” I plead.
“What? You should,” she exclaims. “You’re organized, motivating, and our best salesperson.”
“Yes, and I’m very content with where I am. You know I don’t like change.”
“I know. But it’s happening—so you might as well be in the best spot. And I’d love to see the look on Shannon’s face when Spencer makes the announcement.”
“You’re evil.”
She throws her head back and lets out a wicked laugh.
“I guess we’ll see what happens,” I say. “And he won’t just go off of your recommendation.”
Although Parker could probably use different methods of persuasion, all of which she’d be totally fine with.
“Maybe not, but he’ll figure it out for himself.”
My phone continues buzzing as more wedding texts come through. I’m not sure which is going to have more drama—Caroline’s wedding or my office.
ChapterSix
Caroline steps out of the dressing room, and we all gasp. She’s truly a vision in her gown and messy bun. The dress is absolutely exquisite. It’s a vintage, mermaid-style gown with intricate lace, beading, and crystals. It has a sweetheart neckline, cap sleeves, and a sweep train. The dress hugs her body in all the right places, and it’s exactly the dress I’d imagine Caroline would wear on her wedding day.
“You’re the most beautiful bride,” Erica wails, tears filling her eyes. Caroline begins to fan her face with her hands and, since tears are contagious, my eyes also get a little misty.
Leslie shakes her head, while Rachel sips on her second glass of champagne. She’s been extra quiet today other than chiming in about dress details.
Our bridesmaid dresses are as beautiful as I expected. We all get fitted, and the shade of pink Caroline chooses looks good on everyone.
Andy’s sister, Jeannie, is sitting in one of the white velour armchairs, dabbing the corners of her eyes.
“You’re all going to look amazing,” she whines. “Caroline, are you sure you want me and my belly in the bridal party? I’m not exactly going to fit in—in more ways than one.”
“Are you kidding?” Caroline exclaims. “Of course I want you in the party. You’re my new sister. My only sister, and you’re carrying my first niece or nephew. You’re a very important part of this.”
Jeannie gives her a weak smile. “Thanks, I just wanted to make sure. You know for aesthetic purposes.”
“Your natural glow will be a perfect addition for the aesthetic,” I insist.
“Absolutely,” Caroline says.
The other girls all nod in agreement.
“I guess,” Jeannie says with a sigh.
She gently pats her tiny bump. She really is one of the cutest pregnant women I’ve ever seen.
“I don’t want to hear another word about it,” Caroline says while studying herself in the mirror.
I stand beside her and look at her reflection. “Girl, this gown was totally made for you.”
“Thank you,” she says, her voice cracking. “I still can’t believe it’s finally happening.”
“Who would’ve thought that the guy you met at a polyester paradise fraternity party would end up being your husband?”
