She purses her lips together but doesn’t say anything for a few seconds.
“Jordan is a really nice person,” she says softly.
Ugh. Why am I detecting some sincerity from her?
“Yes, he is,” I agree.
“And you broke up with him.”
She has a point. I did break up with Jordan, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care about him.
“Jordan is free to date whomever he wants, but I don’t want to see him hurt.”
I could get into a long discussion about Bethany’s track record since she first came to Miami to visit. At first she had her sights on Dante the chef, mostly to get back at Reagan, but when he didn’t reciprocate her feelings, she latched onto Paul. She used him for a while to meet people in town and find a job. So, my doubts about her liking Jordan are well supported.
I check the time. “I need to get going. I’ll see you tonight, Reagan.”
When I get in my car, I respond to Diane’s text.
Sorry for the delay. Been so busy. Let’s catch up this evening.
I’m not sure how the conversation is going to go, but I can’t avoid it forever. I usually face things head on, so there’s no reason to stop now.
Chapter Twenty
I’m sitting in Elizabeth’s office waiting for her to finish her phone call. She appears frazzled despite looking so much better after making her decision to move to London. The dark circles under her eyes have returned, and her clothes are wrinkled again.
“Are you okay?” I ask after she ends her call.
She shakes her head. “I’m having so many doubts about picking up my whole life and moving across the pond. Even Billy is starting to second guess his decision.”
I frown. “Well, you’re probably not going to like what I have to say.”
“You don’t want to take over the agency, do you?”
I shake my head. “I’m sorry. I gave it some thought, but I don’t think it’s a good fit for my life right now.”
She lets out a heavy sigh. “I had a feeling, but I wanted to give it a shot. It’s a lot to take on.”
“I’m so flattered that you would trust me enough with this agency,” I continue.
She nods. “You’ve been my star for as long as I can remember.”
I give her a grateful smile. “Are you sure you can’t run it from a far, at least until you get settled?”
“I’m thinking about it,” she says. “I’m so worried that we’re going to get over there and hate it. And what if we decide that we want to come back? I don’t want to give all of this up until I’m sure.”
All of a sudden an idea pops into my head. “You could ask Gabby to help oversee things while you’re gone. She has as much experience in the industry as I do, if not more. And if there’s one person you can count on, it’s her.”
She gives a thoughtful look. “I didn’t think about asking Gabby.”
“You know she’s struggled a bit since moving to Miami.”
She nods. “I know. I’ve talked to my sister about it.”
I don’t tell Elizabeth that Gabby has thought about leaving real estate to start something new. I know she enjoyed planning Theo’s party, but I believe her heart is in real estate. Maybe this is a way to help her and Elizabeth in the meantime.
“I’ll talk to her about it … Thank you for being such a good friend to Gabby. Nikki was so worried about her after what happened back in Orlando.”
