Hmm … Gabby and Theo really do make a cute couple.
“Well, I’m single for the first time in a while, and I think I’m okay with that.”
She nods. “That’s where I was when I moved here. After everything that went down with Dustin and Amber, I was excited to start fresh and get to know myself again.”
“And then you fell out of the hammock and into my heart,” Theo announces.
Gag. Did he really just say that?
“Oh, that was bad,” I say with a cringe.
“It was, wasn’t it?” Theo agrees. “I immediately regretted it once I heard the words come out of my mouth.”
“I thought it was sweet,” Gabby mumbles softly.
I roll my eyes. “On that note, I’m going to bed.”
I say good night to them and make my way to my room. I fall onto my bed and let out a loud sigh. And so the next phase of my life begins. Who knows what will happen, but Lila Barlow is always up for a challenge.
Chapter Three
Diane Hillard is relentless. She’s like the neighbor kid that constantly shows up at your house even when he’s not invited.
I’m in the middle of listing three different properties, and I’ve gotten four texts from her in the last thirty minutes. She won’t stop messaging me about her party. I personally don’t have a preference between potato salad or coleslaw. And why does my opinion matter anyway?
I did break the news that I’d be attending without a plus one, and now she wants to hear all about my breakup with Jordan. I groan and put my phone all the way on the other side of my desk. As if moving it is going to keep her from texting.
“Is it true?” my co-worker Javier asks, sliding his chair over to me. He’s wearing so much cologne, I’m surprised there isn’t a cloud around him like you’d see in a cartoon.
“Is what true?”
Maybe I’m not meant to get much work done today. The constant distractions certainly aren’t helping.
“About you and that delicious Jordan breaking up? Such a shame.”
“Yep. It’s true,” I say without looking up from my laptop.
I’m not sure how he heard, but news travels fast in our town and especially in our office.
“I can’t believe you actually went through with it.” He shakes his head in judgment. Obviously he thinks I’ve made a huge mistake.
My phone buzzes from the other end of my desk, but I refuse to pick it up. I don’t need any more menu details from Diane.
“I sure did,” I reply confidently. “You know I always follow through on what I say I’m going to do.”
My phone continues to buzz with messages.
“Is that him texting? Maybe he’s begging you to take him back?” Javier spins around in his chair like a hyper child. But in his defense, it’s part of his charm.
“No. It’s my client Diane Hillard again. The woman is relentless. Clearly she thinks I have all the time in the world to chat with her.”
“You shouldn’t ignore your clients,” Suzanna calls over her shoulder.
Javier and I both roll our eyes. Suzanna is the one agent who doesn’t mesh well with the rest of the staff here at Fun in the Sun Realty. She’s opinionated and intense, and honestly sometimes I don’t know how she makes it in this business. She’s not a people person at all, and I don’t understand why she picked real estate for her profession. Our business is people.
“I’m not ignoring my client. We already closed on her property,” I reply. Not that it’s any of her business.
“Anyway, now that you’re back in the single world, we need to go out and find some action. A single Lila is lots of fun,” Javier squeals.
