“I’m going to miss him being right next door though,” Gabby says, her face falling.
I pretend to roll my eyes. “You’ll survive for a few months.”
Gabby’s phone rings, and she dives for it. Reagan and I sit on the edge of our seats while we wait to get the scoop.
“Hey.”
She’s quiet as she listens.
I hold up my hands. “What’s happening?”
She holds up her finger. “No way,” she exclaims. Damn, I should’ve told her to put the speaker on.
“Okay, I’ll tell Lila. Love you.”
“What did he say?” Reagan shouts before she has a chance to end the call.
Her eyes grow wide. “Apparently, Sara went over there and was begging Cal to take her back. After he said no, they had a huge blowup, and she was furious. She was throwing his things around the house and completely lost it.”
“Oh, wow.”
I guess Sara isn’t as sweet as Diane thinks she is.
“Cal was heading to his parents’ house, but Theo invited him to his house later.”
I lean back on the couch and exhale.
“There’s no way I’m going to Diane’s,” I announce. “I won’t be able to sit there and listen to Sara play victim all night.”
“Yeah, you should stay away,” Reagan agrees. “At least until the dust settles.”
I shoot Diane a quick text letting her know that I wasn’t able to switch my schedule and asked for a rain check. I refuse to get dragged into a mess that has nothing to do with me. I’m glad Cal is going to his parents' house. If anyone can comfort him, it’s his mom.
Chapter Eighteen
Despite my lazy morning, I end up having a productive day. I find two condos and a house for my roommates and me that I go to look at. I also leave a message for my parents, letting them know that I’m finally ready to move forward with listing the house. They told me I had time, but why prolong the inevitable? It’s not going to get any easier, and at least now I know I’ll still be able to live with Reagan, and Gabby until she gets married. Of course Cal has been in the back of my mind the whole day.
Diane finally texted me back and asked me about coming to dinner later in the week. I told her I’d let her know. I won’t be able to avoid her forever, but I’ll try for as long as possible.
“Are you sure you don’t want to come with me to Kennedy’s house?” Reagan asks, as she digs around in her handbag.
I sigh. “You know I adore your sister, but I think I’m going to stay home tonight.”
She presses her lips together and tries to hide her smile.
“What?” I ask.
“Nothing.”
“Just say what you’re thinking.”
“I was just thinking that if Cal goes to Theo’s, then you could pop next door and check in on him.”
I wrinkle my nose. “I don’teverpop over to Theo Jorgenson’s house.”
She giggles. “I thought you two were getting to be close friends.”
“Whoa”—I hold up my hands to stop her—“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We’re still learning how to be in the same room with each other.”
