Theo doesn’t know everything, even though he thinks he does.
“Sara didn’t tell Diane the truth,” I exclaim. ‘She put all the blame on Cal, so of course Diane thinks he’s a monster who broke her niece’s heart.”
Gabby shrugs. “Well maybe you should set her straight.”
I purse my lips together. “Maybe I should.”
Gabby pours the cereal into our bowls, and we eat while chatting. I change the subject and ask her if Theo and she have talked about wedding plans.
“We have.” A look of panic spreads across her face.
I put my hand on hers. “Calm down. This isn’t like last time.”
She nods. “I know, I know. We want to do something simple on the beach with our closest friends and family followed by an intimate dinner.”
“That sounds perfect.”
She nods. “I was planning a big wedding last time, and part of that was for my family. This day is about Theo and me, no one else.”
“Exactly … I love the intimate dinner idea.”
She inhales deeply. “I was going to talk to you and Reagan about this later, but I may as well ask now. Would you be interested in being one of my bridesmaids? It will just be you and Reagan, and my sister-in-law. I wouldn’t even know Theo if it wasn’t for you.”
All of a sudden, a rush of emotion shoots through me as I nod and fight back tears. “I’m sorry I gave you such a hard time about Theo in the beginning,” I say, dropping my head. “I was being selfish because I was mad at him.”
“It’s doesn’t matter.”
“Yes, it does,” I insist. “I’m glad you didn’t listen to me.”
She laughs. “Yeah, I didn’t know how that was going to turn out.”
“Thank you for asking me. I’d be honored to be a part of your day.” I pause. “Mrs. Theo Jorgenson … are you sure?”
We both start laughing.
“I’ll make Theo call Cal,” she says. “That way we’ll know what’s happening, and you can decide if you want to go have dinner with them.”
She runs into the house to get her phone. I put my cereal bowl down on the table and stare out at my backyard. Is there a chance that Cal and Sara get back together? Ew. The thought makes me sick to my stomach.
“Diane Hillard told Lila that Sara was over at Cal’s,” Gabby says into the phone.
“A few minutes ago.”
She grits her teeth and holds up her phone. Theo is calling him now.
“What did he say?”
“He said that Cal will never take her back, just like I told you.”
I sigh. “We’ll see.”
Reagan comes home from brunch with Jeremy, and we fill her in on everything that happened when Cal came over late last night and Diane’s phone call. Gabby asks Reagan to be a bridesmaid in her wedding and Reagan cries, a lot. After she finally calms down, I make her cry again by asking if they want to find a new place to rent together.
“I thought you might move in with Theo,” I tell Gabby.
She shakes her head. “We talked about it, but we want to wait until we’re married so we can officially start that part of our life together.”
“I think that makes it more special,” Reagan says.
