“Do you know something I should?”

I sigh. “I don’t know anything, but I know what I saw at the party. And whenever I ask her about him, she gets really uncomfortable and jittery.”

Theo frowns. “What did you see?”

I tell him about watching them together and their body language.

“So they didn’t do anything?”

“No … You don’t believe it, do you?”

He holds up his hand. “I didn’t say that. And AJ is—well, he’s not someone who likes to be tied down.”

“Cal seemed surprised when I asked about AJ too,” I tell him.

Theo is quiet.

I get the feeling that I’m missing something here. Why would Sara tell me they wanted to buy the house, yet Theo says that there’s no way they would? And what’s the deal with this AJ guy?

“I’m confused. Isn’t AJ your friend?”

“Yes. I mean we’re not besties or anything,” he says, making quotation makes with his fingers. “He’s that friend that you go out with and have a few beers, but I’m not sure I’d trust him around my girlfriend.”

Ah, so the truth comes out.

“So let me ask you, Theo—do you think it’s possible that something has or could happen between him and Sara?”

What am I doing? Is this any of my business? Why do I even care? Theo is going to ask me this and it’ll probably get back to Cal. I’m not at a place in my life where I want to be dragged back into Cal Sims’s orbit. But somehow here I am.

“I don’t know Sara that well,” I admit.

“She’s a nice person, and she and Cal have been together for about three years,” he says. “Between you and me, I expected them to be engaged by now. Cal has always said that when the timing was right, he would propose, but he never has. He did tell me recently that things weren’t great, but maybe they’re working it out.”

“Maybe by moving in together?” I suggest.

“Possibly, but they wouldn’t live here.”

We hear the door open, and Reagan walks in. She looks back and forth between Theo and me.

“Oh no, what’s wrong?”

I giggle. “Nothing, we’re just talking.”

She puts her bag on the counter and says hi to Theo.

“How was your day?” I ask.

She shrugs. “It was—long. I need to go to bed early tonight.”

Theo stands up. “I should get home and pack. I’m leaving early in the morning for a trip. Make sure you take care of my fiancée for me.”

“We will,” Reagan says.

“Thanks for talking, Lila.”

“Sure, and think about what I said.”

He nods. “I will.”
