“I can’t wait to come to Golden. It’s going to be the highlight of my trip.”
I roll my eyes. She certainly didn’t seem to mind being glued to Paul’s side for almost the entire day, but now she doesn’t want Dante to know about him.
“Okay, here’s Reagan. Can’t wait to see you.”
She hands me the phone and tells me she’s going to take a bubble bath. As soon as she shuts the bathroom door and I hear the water running, I get back on the phone.
“Hey.”
“I guess she’s serious about moving here.”
“Maybe,” I say. “We haven’t really had a chance to discuss it.”
“I bet you’re ecstatic.”
I chew my lip. “Yeah, it would be fun.”
Dante asks me to shoot him a text once I know what time we’re heading to Golden. Unfortunately, he has to go, and I’m frustrated that Bethany took so much of his time. It’s obvious that she’s basking in all the attention she’s getting from both Paul and Dante. Maybe Lila was right to be concerned, especially because Paul is her friend. I’m not sure what Bethany’s trying to accomplish or if it’s just about being noticed. She’s always been a little flirtatious, but she was in a relationship back in college, so she never acted that way toward Dante.
Ugh. My headache is still lingering, so I decide to follow Bethany’s lead and jump into the shower. When I come out, she’s sitting at the table with her hair twisted up in a towel. She has her laptop in front of her and is typing feverishly.
“What are you doing?
“I’m updating my résumé. Paul wants me to send it over as soon as possible.”
I bite my bottom lip. “Aw … Paul is such a nice guy.”
“Definitely, and a great contact to have. It sounds like he knows everyone.”
I lean against the counter and fold my arms. “Yeah, I was wondering why you didn’t want me telling Dante about him. You two looked pretty close yesterday.”
Bethany glances at her phone and then types something else.
“Oh well, I don’t want to limit myself already. Paul is sweet, but I’m still a very single girl.”
I feel my muscles tense up.Was Lila right? This still doesn’t explain why she didn’t want Dante to know.
“Yeah, but Dante is your friend.”
Bethany looks up from her laptop.
“Of course he is. I just didn’t want him teasing me about Paul.”
I don’t say anything for a few seconds.
“Bethany, are you seriously considering moving here?”
She doesn’t look up from her laptop. “I sure am. I’d be crazy not to—you were right all along.”
This would be a good time to ask her why she basically disappeared from my life before I moved here. Just as I’m about to say something, my phone buzzes. It’s Kennedy, but I ignore it.
“That’s actually something I wanted to talk to you about.”
My phone rings again, and sure enough it’s my sister. Sometimes my sister will keep calling until I answer. She does the same thing to her husband and our parents. I guess the peacefulness and serenity of Barbara’s spa day is over.
“Do you need to answer that?” Bethany asks. “Someone is desperate to talk to you.”
“It’s Kennedy. She probably wants to crash our day again. I’ll call her back later.”
