“This is a nice surprise.”
I listen as he tells me about catching up on laundry and working out.
“You’ve had a productive morning,” I say. “What time did you go to bed?”
“Right after I texted you. Sorry it was so late.”
“Don’t worry about it. I had already crashed.”
“I figured. Did you have fun on your friend's boat?”
My brain immediately shoots to Jeremy.Fun?Yes, that’s one way to describe it.
“It was a lot of fun,” I say. “Bethany definitely made a new friend.”
“Oh, yeah?”
“Yep, his name is—”
“Who’s on the phone?” Bethany asks. I glance up and see that her hair is completely disheveled, and her eyes are still puffy. She’s wearing a big sweatshirt and the tiniest shorts ever.
“It’s Dante,” I whisper.
She starts waving her arms wildly. “Don’t tell him about Paul.”
I give her a curious look. “Why?”
“Just don’t.”
I’m not sure why she doesn’t want him to know, but I honor her wishes.
“Help yourself to some coffee or anything you want.”
“Reagan, you still there?” Dante asks.
“Yep. Sorry.”
“Anyway, I was just wondering if you’re coming to Golden tonight. Seeing you yesterday made me realize I need to make more time for you.”
Holy crap. Hearing him say that causes a stir in my chest. The question is—how do I respond?
“I’d like that,” I say. “We’re still planning on coming to Golden tonight.”
I look at Bethany who nods her head eagerly. She holds her hand out. “Can I talk to him?”
“Uh, sure.”
“Hang on. Bethany wants to say hi.”
“Hey, you,” she sings, taking my phone and walking out into the hallway.
Ah, nothing like an interruption at the worst possible moment.
I hear her laughing loudly.
“I made lots of friends yesterday,” she coos. “If I move here, I’m going to have to meet people, especially since you’re so busy all the time.”
I scowl. Maybe Lila was right about not letting my guard down.
