I wish I could talk to him before Bethany gets up. And after hearing Lila’s concerns, I should probably just tell Bethany about how I’ve been feeling about Dante. I’m also really curious to know more about what she thought of Paul, considering she barely left his side on the boat. She didn’t have a lot to say about him on the way home, but she could barely keep her eyes open. Clearly Bethany is embracing all the attention she’s getting with her new look.

We only have a few more days together before she heads back to Chicago, and I want to make the most of it.

Chapter Fourteen

My headache is still raging, so I go to the kitchen for a bottle of pain relief and a lot of water.

“I don’t think I can do it,” Lila says, dropping spinach into the blender. “You know there’s no love lost between Theo and me.”

Gabby is sitting at the counter, holding a cup of coffee in her hands.

“And you know I respect your feelings. I want his party to be perfect, and it would be a good way to extend an olive branch.”

“What are you guys talking about?” I say, rubbing my forehead.

“Whoa. What happened to you?” Gabby asks, making a face.

I groan as I hoist myself onto a barstool and rest my chin on my hands. “Long story short—Paul’s boat and too many drinks. It’s my own fault. I know better than to have more than one.”

“I’ll get you some water,” Lila offers.

“Have you seen Bethany yet this morning?”

“Nope,” Gabby says. “Did she have more than one drink also?”

“Definitely,” Lila says, setting a glass of water down in front of me.

Both Lila and Gabby are dressed and ready for work. I totally forgot it’s Monday. This vacation has made me lose all concept of what day it is.

“Gabby wants to throw Theo a birthday party here,” Lila says. “Which is totally fine.”

“But I want her to be at the party,” Gabby whines.

“You know that’s not a good idea. For multiple reasons,” Lila replies.

Those reasons are obviously her non-friendship with Theo and that Dr. Cal might be in attendance.

“By the way, last night I told Reagan I might get a few cats,” Lila says, changing the subject.

I snort.

“Cats?” Gabby exclaims. “What are you talking about?”

“Jordan wants to be exclusive and she’s getting cold feet,” I mumble.

Gabby nods her head. “That explains a lot. You’ve been pretty distracted lately.”

She waves her hand. “Whatever. Anyway, do you really think I should be at Theo’s party? I’m probably not on his guest list.”

“Actually, he’s told me he hopes you and he can move forward and try to be friends. The conversations you’ve had lately have been pleasant.”

And by conversations, she means saying hello and waving from their respective driveways.

Lila turns on the blender. The loud noise fills the kitchen and adds to my already pounding head.

When she finally turns it off, she pours the bright green liquid into a glass and then adds some to a second glass and puts it down in front of me.

“Drink this—it will help.”
