It definitely makes me feel good that he’s been thinking of me, but for some reason Jeremy’s comment about not letting anything get in the way if you really want to see someone keeps running through my mind.

Although his situation is different, could Dante make seeing me a priority if he really wanted to? I still can’t be upset because he was open and honest with me about his restaurant being his main focus right now.

I wait a few minutes before responding to his text.

Thinking about you, too. Heading to pick up Bethany in a bit. Do you have any time to hang out this week?

I feel good about my response. I’m planning to take Bethany to Golden, but Dante would only be able to pop out of the kitchen for a few minutes.

I could meet for a quick breakfast on Sunday. I’ll check schedule for rest of week. Tell Bethany hi for me.

A smile spreads across my face. A quick breakfast is fine with me because at least I’ll get to see him. And just having the opportunity to reminisce with Bethany and Dante will be awesome.

A knock on my door startles me.

“Come in.”

Lila opens the door and pops her head in. She’s wearing a short black romper and wedges. Her long black hair is parted down the middle.

“Hey, when are you going to pick up your friend?”

“In a few minutes. She gets in at eight.”

“That’s exciting. I have a date tonight, but I’ll chat with you girls when I get back.”

I raise my eyebrows. “A date?”

She shrugs nonchalantly. “Yeah, Jordan and I are going to dinner in South Beach.”

Lila and Jordan have had an on-again, off-again courtship since I first met her. He’s so dreamy—he used to be a model for Abercrombie and Fitch. And more importantly he’s totally in love with Lila, although she says she doesn’t feel the same way. Gabby and I have spent many hours talking to her about him.

Lila leans on the doorframe. “Jordan says he has something important to talk to me about.”

“Really? What do you think it is?”

“Probably about us.” She pauses. “I know he wants to be exclusive, but I don’t know. I guess I see us more as friends in the end.”

My thoughts immediately bounce between Dante and Jeremy. I’m growing more confused about my feelings for both men. Am I just comfortable with Dante because of our history? Is this finally our time? Does Jeremy really have deeper feelings for me? And if he does, would I act on that? Both men are my friends—what if neither is meant to be more than that?

“Anyway, have fun with Bethany. I look forward to meeting her. Did you get the guest room set up?”

“Yes. Thanks for being cool about her staying here.”

Lila waves her hand. “This is your home too. Your friends are always welcome.”

I wish her good luck with Jordan before she leaves. Then I throw on a pair of distressed jeans and a blue T-shirt and scarf down some fruit salad.

Knots are taking ahold of my stomach as I drive to the airport. Both excitement and concern are battling it out in my mind. Will it be easy? Will it be awkward? The anticipation is always the worst in any situation.

As soon as I approach Miami International Airport, I get a text from Bethany letting me know that she’s landed and picked up her baggage. This forces me to take a few deep breaths. Here we go.

Chapter Nine

“Reagan,” she squeals, throwing her arms around me. “I’m so happy to see you.”

She steps back and, wow.Don’t stare, Reagan.

I didn’t know what to expect when Bethany and I reunited, but I definitely wasn’t prepared for how much she’s changed—physically. She still looks like my best friend, sort of. Judging from her pictures on social media, it was obvious she had Botox and filler. And let’s be honest, who hasn’t? But this is different.
