Ugh. Am I really that oblivious and out of the loop when it comes to men? Yes, it’s been a while since I’ve been involved with anyone, but even before that I was never good with this stuff. I’ve always been better at dishing out advice than taking my own.

“Maybe Jeremy doesn’t even realize he has feelings for you,” she suggests. “He’s obviously got a bit of jealousy going on with Dante though.”

I put my face in my hands. Could Amanda be right? And if she is, what does this mean?

Gabby and I continue talking while we make a salad and put some vegetable soup on the stove. It’s such a far cry from Dante’s meals, it’s not even funny.

The interesting thing is after talking to Gabby about Jeremy, I can’t stop thinking about it and him. Bethany’s visit couldn’t have come at a better time.

Chapter Eight

When I arrive at work, I’m super anxious. After talking to Gabby, I can’t stop thinking about Jeremy and the what-ifs. If only I had enough nerve to just come out and ask him.

I also think some of my anticipation is due to Bethany’s impending arrival. A lot of time has passed since we’ve spent time together. It’s totally understandable to feel nervous.

I’m the first one in the office, other than Carl. He’s on the phone, so I give him a wave and sit down at my desk. When I glance at Jeremy’s desk, I get a little flutter in my stomach. Holy crap, what’s happening to me?

A few seconds later Amanda comes in, balancing a tray of coffee cups. I jump up from my chair to help her.

“I was at Starbucks, so I figured I’d grab everyone’s favorites.”

“You’re the best.”

I place my cup on my desk and hand Carl his since he’s still on his call.

“What’s new?” she asks.

“My friend Bethany flies in tonight. I’m so excited.”

“You really haven’t seen her since you moved here?” she asks.

“Almost a year, so we have a lot to catch up on.”

Amanda sips on her coffee while suggesting places I should take Bethany.

When Jeremy arrives, I catch myself staring at him, which is silly because I’ve always thought he was attractive. Why am I paying more attention to him now?

He’s wearing a blue button-up shirt and black pants. He obviously didn’t shave this morning because there’s just a touch of a shadow on his jawline.

“Morning, ladies. You’re all looking lovely today. You too, Panda,” he calls to Carl.

I don’t read anything into it because this is a standard greeting from Jeremy.

“What are we talking about?” he asks.

I push all the crazy thoughts out of my head and remind him about Bethany’s arrival.

“Are you bringing her in to meet us?” Jeremy asks. “We can help you convince her to move here. I can be very charming when I want to be.”

I roll my eyes, but it’s kind of true.

“Maybe introducing her to you is the wrong move,” Amanda suggests. “Reagan wants her to be impressed with our city.”

“Ouch. That hurt, Amanda,” he says, dramatically. “Office life would be so boring without me. You’d all hate coming to work if I wasn’t here.”

I smile. He might have a point because he certainly makes the days more fun.

“Hey, Blondie, are you going to miss me while you’re on vacation?” Jeremy asks, sliding his chair over to me. With his close proximity I get a whiff of his cologne. It smells absolutely amazing—warm, masculine … Gah! I must really need of a vacation.
