She folds her hands and places them on the table.

“I just think if Bethany was to come around and apologize, you’d accept it. Your capacity to forgive is one of your most endearing qualities. It’s also one of the most annoying.”

I roll my eyes. “Thanks.”

“And I don’t think all the Dante stuff is going to matter much longer anyway”—she says giving me a wicked smile—“considering you’re going on a date with that yummy Jeremy. There’s no better way to get over one man than with another.”

“We’ll see,” I say, blushing.

“I still can’t believe you’ve worked with him all these months and never considered it could turn into more.”

I’ve been thinking the same thing. Although hearing my sister call himyummymakes me cringe.

“I always thought Jeremy was good-looking, but I never thought we’d—” I pause. My brain replays our first kiss on Paul’s boat and then our interaction on the magic patio. “Anyway, tonight should be interesting.”

“Mmhmm …” she teases. “You’ve been working together for how long? You have to make up for lost time.”

I feel my cheeks get hot again.

“Ohh … I’m so happy to see this kind of reaction from you,” Kennedy cheers. Honestly, she may be even more excited about this date than I am.

“You have to call me right away. No more of this waiting days to give me the information.”

“Ihaveto call you?” I ask, the corner of my mouth curving up into a smirk.

She shoots me a dirty look. “Really? After everything I’ve done for you. You’d leave me hanging?”

“I guess you won’t know, will you?”

“That’s mean.”

I laugh. “You know I love you.”

“Yeah, yeah—I love you too.”

I’m not sure what tonight will bring, but the closer I get to seeing Jeremy, the more my anticipation grows.

There’s just one thing I have do before I see him. The more I think about it, I realize I need to talk to Dante and close that door once and for all.

When I get home from breakfast, Lila is standing in the kitchen frowning at her phone. She’s wearing a pink and gray workout outfit and matching gray sneakers. Her black hair is pulled back into a slick ponytail.

“Good morning,” I say cheerfully.

“Morning,” she says, her face tightening. “I have some disappointing information for you.”

My smile fades. Lila doesn’t sugar coat anything, so if she says she has bad news she means it.

“What’s wrong?”

“I’m so frustrated with Paul right now.”

Paul?Ugh. I already know this has something to do with Bethany.

“Why?”

She lets out an exaggerated sigh.
