“Oh, girl, I can show you some properties that you will fall in love with instantly. In fact, I have a new client who’s relocating out west. She’s putting her condo on the market, but she might be willing to rent it for a while. It’s stunning, great location and view.”

Bethany shrugs nonchalantly. “I’m sure it is, but I was hoping to stay with friends until I get settled.”

Gabby looks defeated.

“I told you I wasn’t sure if Lila was interested in another roommate," I remind her. "But I can let her know you'd like to stay here while they find you a place."

“Well, hopefully Lila sees the benefits of having another person living here,” Bethany says, rising to her feet. “And money talks.”

She says goodnight to Gabby as she dances to the bathroom. Gabby gives me a confused look, so I motion for her to follow me back to my room.

“What just happened?” Gabby whispers, closing the door behind her.

“You don’t want to know,” I say, rubbing my temples vigorously.

“Actually, I do,” she says, plopping down on the bed.

“You don’t have to stay,” I tell her. “Theo is waiting for you.”

“He’ll be fine,” she insists. “Let me ask you something. Would you really be okay with Bethany living here? Even if it’s only for a few weeks.”

I tighten my jaw. “Honestly, no. And Lila won’t be happy to hear that she was fawning all over Dante after hanging all over Paul yesterday. She already said she doesn’t really trust her.”

“Do you think she’s interested in Dante or Paul?”

I shrug. “I’m trying to figure that out. Maybe she likes all the attention. When I asked her about Paul, she mentioned he has a lot of contacts. And after I told her about Dante and me kissing, she asked if it was just that one time.”

“Wow.”

“I guess we’ll see how tomorrow morning goes when Dante comes over to make breakfast.”

Gabby makes a face. “Oh, fun.”

“Yep, that plan happened when I was in the bathroom at Golden.”

I don’t mention seeing them laughing with their heads together.

Gabby lets out a sigh.

“Anyway, you should get to Theo’s. Thanks for listening.”

Gabby gives me a hug and tells me to call her if I need to talk.

Honestly, it’s been a very long day, and I’m tired of talking. After she leaves, I change out of my dress and wash my face. I finally crawl into bed and mindlessly scroll through my phone. When I come to Jeremy’s number, I pause. Without thinking, I type a message.

Hi, sorry it’s late. Just wanted to make sure everything is okay at the office.

I hesitate for a few seconds before sending. Not even a minute goes by before my phone buzzes.

Hi! Checking up on me, huh??Everything is fine.

A second later another text comes through.

The truth is the office feels empty. It’s no fun without you there.

A big grin spreads across my face.

Are you sure about that? You really miss me giving you orders and yelling at you for bringing donuts in?
