She twists her mouth to the side. “Okay.”

This isn’t the place I want to have a discussion with her about Dante or Paul or her move. We already had a few tense moments earlier in the night, but I know I can’t wait any longer. One way or another—it’s time. This conversation is long overdue.

As soon as we get home I quickly change into my pajamas and head to the guest room to talk to Bethany.

I exhale and knock on the door.

“Come in.”

When I open the door, I see that she’s already changed into her super tiny lingerie pajamas. Seriously, who does she think she’s going to see here?

“Hey, can you talk for a minute?”

“Sure,” she says, sitting on the edge of the bed. She gives me a worried look, so I don’t waste any time getting to the point. I tell her about the last time Dante came here to cook and how we discussed wanting to spend more time together.

She presses her lips together. “Why didn’t you say anything sooner?”

I sigh. “I don’t know. At first, I was just waiting for the right time. I wanted us to reconnect and have fun like we used to.”

This is partly true, especially the way we left things the last time we saw each other.

“So, you and Dante kissed?” she asks. I honestly can’t tell if she’s surprised or bothered by the news.

“Yes,” I say. “We started reminiscing, and one thing led to another.”

“And it was just that one time?”

“Yes,” I say, folding my arms. I’m trying to read her, but she’s not showing much emotion.

“Why?” I ask.

She shrugs. “I just thought you were interested in Jeremy.”

Hmm … it’s obvious that she’s trying to shift the subject off of Dante. Maybe she is bothered by what happened with him and me.

She gives me a coy smile. “Any person with eyes can see the way he looks at you. I noticed it right away when we were at brunch.”

I chew on my bottom lip. Admittedly, her bringing up Jeremy has thrown me a bit. Perhaps her intention is to gauge my feelings for both men. If I tell her I’m starting to have feelings for Jeremy, that leaves Dante free and clear. Although I doubt it really matters to her either way. She’s already started to make her move on Dante.

“What are you girls up to?” Gabby asks, knocking on the door.

“Talking about boys,” Bethany says.

“Ah … our favorite subject,” Gabby says with a laugh. “Speaking of which, I’m going next door to hang with Theo. He’s leaving for another business trip tomorrow.”

“How fun is it to have your boyfriend living next door?” Bethany asks. “You have the perfect setup.”

Gabby’s cheeks turn pink.

“I can’t wait to live with you girls,” she squeals, clapping her hands together. “Does Theo have any single friends?”

“What?” Gabby asks, a shocked look on her face.

“I haven’t had a chance to discuss it with Lila,” I say quickly. “Bethany asked me about staying with us after she moves. I told her that you girls would definitely help her find an amazing place to live.”

Gabby and I are so in tune that she catches on to what I’m saying right away.
