After taking the X-rays, the nurse leads me back to the exam room and tells me that the doctor will be in after he looks at the images.

I hop onto the table and take my phone out to check my messages. There’s one message from my mother with two articles about areas to avoid in Miami. I roll my eyes. I don’t know if she will ever get used to the idea of me living here. The other is from my sister-in-law checking in on me.

I’m really grateful for Nikki. When she married my brother, I wasn’t sure we’d get along, but she’s the person who’s been there for me through some of my darkest moments.

A few minutes later there’s a knock on the door.

“I have good news,” Dr. Sims announces.

My heart begins to beat against the walls of my chest. Moment of truth.

“What is it?”

“The images are showing that it’s just a bad sprain. It should heal relatively quickly if you take it easy.”

I breathe a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness.”

“So that means rest, ice, compress, and anti-inflammatory meds for the pain. I’m sending you with a bandage to keep it immobile for a few days.”

“Thank you so much,” I say.

“You’re welcome,” he says. “I’m still going to check in with Theo to make sure you’re following orders.”

“Oh, I actually don’t really know him.” I pause when I realize how stupid I sound. “I mean, we just met.”

Dr. Sims gives me a curious look. This is really awkward. He’s probably wondering why I’m here with Theo if I barely know him.

“Well, in case you’re wondering, he’s one of the good guys,” he says with a gleam in his eye. “We’ve been friends since high school.”

I consider asking him if he knows Lila, but I know he needs to get back to work.

“Thanks for letting me know,” I say awkwardly.

“I’d also like you to follow up with your primary care doctor in a few weeks if you have any concerns.”

“I actually just moved here, so I don’t have a doctor yet.”

He nods. “No problem. Just let me know if you need anything in the meantime.”

“I will.”

“And welcome to Miami.”

I smile. “Thank you. It’s definitely been eventful.”

When I walk back to the waiting room, Theo is typing something on his phone. He stands up as soon as he sees me. “Well?”

I hold up my bandaged wrist.

“It’s only a sprain, so you can stop beating yourself up about it.”

His shoulders relax immediately.

“I told her that I’d check in with you to make sure she’s resting,” Dr. Sims calls from the doorway.

Theo nods. “I’ll make sure she is.”

What?I give him a curious look, and his eyes lock on mine.
