“It’s nice to meet you.” I’m still in such a daze, trying to make sense of my fall and Theo being here.
“Anyway, since it was my fault you fell, please let me take you to urgent care. There’s one not too far from here.”
First, he shows up in my backyard. Now he wants me to get into a car with him. Should I be worried?
“That’s nice of you, but I think I’m okay to drive myself.”
As I start to stand up, he jumps to his feet to help me.
“Are you sure? Do you know your way around here?”
I chew on my lower lip.
“That’s what I thought. I’ll meet you out front in ten minutes.”
Before I have a chance to say anything, he rushes away and disappears between the houses.
I’m so confused. One minute I’m soaking up the beauty of my new home, and the next I’m injured and getting into a car with a handsome stranger—neighbor.
He’s right though—I have no idea where to go, and my wrist really hurts. I could always call an Uber, but isn’t that the same thing? I wouldn’t know a random Uber driver any more than Theo.
I hurry inside to find my phone. While I wait for Lila to answer, I hold the bag of ice on my wrist.
“Hey,” she answers. “What do you think of the house? Are you finding your way around?”
The house is the last thing on my mind at the moment.
“Oh, yes it’s beautiful,” I say. “And thank you for the sweet welcome gift.”
“You’re welcome,” she says.
I clear my throat. “So, something interesting just happened, and I met your neighbor.”
“Really? Which one?
“His name is Theo.”
“Theo Jorgenson, ugh.” A detect a hint of disgust in her voice, and that’s not the reaction I was hoping for.
“That doesn’t sound good. Is he trouble?”
She laughs. “No, but I can’t stand him. His family has lived next door for forever.”
My mind immediately wanders to why she doesn’t like him. He was really nice to me—although he did startle me, which made me fall.
“I did hear that he was planning to sell the house, so maybe that’s why he’s there.”
I sit down on the edge of the bed and tell her about my little hammock mishap and how Theo offered to give me a ride.
“I can come get you if you need me to,” she says. “I’m waiting on a call, but I can always do that from the car.”
The last thing I want is to interfere with Lila’s day. I don’t want her thinking I’m high maintenance before we even start living together.
I assure her that I’m fine before getting off the phone. Theo is probably waiting for me outside. I glance at my wrist which is now swollen.
I knew this move was going to be an adventure, but I certainly didn’t expect it to start like this. I sigh. Here goes nothing.
When I walk outside, there’s a sleek black Tesla sitting in front of the house. Theo gets out of the car and meets me at the passenger side to open the door. Okay, so on top of being extremely good-looking, he scores a few points in the gentleman department.
