“I’m sure it is, but I can think of a million other things I’d rather do.”
Lila gives me a funny look. “Are you okay?”
I know my eyes are still puffy from the night before, but I really don’t want to get into it.
“I’m fine,” I say, opening a cabinet and grabbing a coffee mug.
“At least you didn’t have breakfast with Theo today.”
“Nope. No breakfast.”
But I did go knocking on his door in tears late last night.
“It sounds like you’re getting things going at work,” she says. “Elizabeth said you already have a great lead.”
I lean against the counter while my coffee brews.
“Yes, my potential client is Danielle Sims.”
She looks confused. “Should I know who that is?”
I don’t know if she’s ever met Cal’s brother, but I’m all about keeping lines of communication open.
“She’s married to Cal’s brother.”
Lila’s eyes grow wide. “Oh, I know Kevin, but I never met his wife.”
“Theo actually referred her to me,” I add.
She frowns. “He’s really laying it on thick, isn’t he? But I’d say go for it.”
Wait. I’m confused. Is she telling me to go for Theo?
“You should take full advantage of all the contacts he has.” She lets out a wicked laugh as she heads to her room.
I certainly don’t intend to use Theo for anything, but as a friend I appreciate any help he can give me.
After staring into the fridge for a few seconds, I finally decide to make some avocado toast. It’s not Theo’s perfect omelet, but it’s a close second.
When I return to my room to get ready, my phone rings. I groan when I see my mother’s number. I’m already prepared for the questions and a lecture about staying safe in this city.
“Hey, Mom.”
“Good morning. I’m glad you answered,” she says. “I wasn’t sure if you’d be busy.”
Really? It’s seven thirty in the morning. Where did she think I’d be?
“I’m about to jump into the shower to get ready for my day.”
As expected she launches into questions about Lila’s house and the area where I live.
“Mom, you know I moved into a gated community.”
I told her this more times than I can count. I even sent her the link to the community Facebook page so she could research it.
“Well, you can never be too careful,” she reminds me. “What about your roommates? Do they seem normal?”
“How would you define normal?” I tease.
