“So, how did you hurt your wrist?” she asks, acknowledging my presence.

Theo and I glance at each other, and he frowns.

“I sort of fell out of a hammock and braced myself with my hand.”

Yep, it gets more embarrassing each time I say it out loud.

She makes a few notes on my chart.

“Dr. Sims will probably order some X-rays. He should be right in.”

She shoots one last dreamy glance at Theo before she leaves. She couldn’t have been more blatantly obvious. Maybe she should talk to Dr. Sims about putting in a good word for her?

“I think you have an admirer,” I tease.

He shrugs nonchalantly. “Nah.”

He seems completely unfazed by the nurse’s obvious attempts to get his attention. Maybe this kind of thing happens to him all the time.

“Seriously, she couldn’t take her eyes off you,” I exclaim. “I’m shocked she was able to take my vitals.”

A few seconds later there’s a knock on the door and the doctor pops his head in. That was fast. I’m grateful Theo is here with me, I guess who you know really comes in handy.

“Hello, Gabrielle. I’m Dr. Sims.”

Cal Sims is almost as attractive as Theo, with thick dirty blond hair and piercing blue eyes. Miami is certainly not lacking in the men department. Too bad I’m trying to stay clear of them altogether.

He points to Theo and shakes his head. “I should warn you about this guy—although I’m obviously too late.”

Theo rolls his eyes and lightly punches Cal on the arm.

“Thanks, man.”

Both of them laugh.

“Okay, so I see you fell out of a hammock and landed on your hand. Ouch.”

I feel my face getting hot. I can’t wait for this day to be over so I don’t have to explain this to anyone else. Maybe I should change my story.

“Yes.”

“Those hammocks can be a hazard,” he says. "How did it happen?”

I’m not sure if he’s being sarcastic or not.

I purse my lips and glance at Theo. “It was just an unfortunate accident.”

Cal looks at my hand and starts asking me questions. I wince as he applies pressure to a few areas.

“Let’s get some pictures and see what’s going on in there.”

I groan.

“I’m going to step out and check my emails,” Theo says. He stares at me for a few seconds before leaving the room with Cal. He seems to be genuinely concerned, which is kind of sweet.

The nurse returns and leads me to the X-ray room. She’s definitely not as chatty as she was when Theo was in the room. I wonder if he has that kind of effect on women all the time.

The good news is the pain has subsided a lot. I really want to get this over with and go home. I have so much to do, and this is not how I expected to start my life in Miami.
