When I walk inside, Lila is sitting on the couch, scrolling through her phone.
“What’s really going on with you and Theo?” she asks. “I thought you wanted to get used to life here without a man complicating it."
I nod. “Believe me, I do.”
“But you really like Theo,” she says knowingly.
I chew on my bottom lip. “Is it that obvious?”
She shrugs. “Probably not to most people. I just have a sense when it comes to this stuff.”
I let out a frustrated sigh and fall down on the couch across from her. “It wasn’t my intention, believe me. He’s been so good to me since I arrived, and now I want to spend more time with him.”
I finally tell her about going to Theo’s after getting the news of Dustin and Amber’s engagement.
“You should’ve come talk to me—although Reagan would probably be the better option. I’m not the most nurturing person.”
I laugh. “That’s the thing. I was so upset that I didn’t think twice about going over there first. It felt like the natural thing to do.”
She groans. “I can’t believe I’m going to say this.”
“Then don’t.”
“Are you sure?” she asks.
“No. Go ahead and say it.”
She gets a pained look on her face. “Maybe you should see where things go with Theo. You don’t have to rush it—just let things progress naturally.”
I shrug. “Maybe—”
Her shoulders relax, and she seems relieved that I’m not sprinting out the door to talk to Theo.
“It’s so exhilarating when you start to have feelings for someone. Watching both you and Reagan is making me envious of that initial excitement.”
I pull my knees to my chest. “What about Enrique?”
“Nah. I mean, I like him, but the magic just isn’t there.” She lets out a loud sigh. “Anyway, I think I’m going to take a hot bath.” She stands up and stretches her arms over her head. “By the way, if you decide to cook anything, don’t forget about the timer.”
I cover my face with my hands. “I know. I promise I won’t burn the house down.”
“Good because I really love this place,” she says with a laugh. “And maybe we should hang a warning sign out by the hammocks.”
I groan. “You probably should hang a warning sign outside my room while you’re at it.”
She picks up her bag and heads to her bedroom.
I actually feel better after talking to Lila. I don’t know what’s going to happen between Theo and me, but it’s a huge relief that Lila’s not completely against it. The last thing I want is any tension around here.
It’s probably a good thing that he’s out of town. Now I won’t wonder what he’s doing or be tempted to rush over should any crisis arise. His absence gives me more time to really focus on other things—besides him.
Holy crap!My conversation with Theo distracted me from checking my messages every five seconds.
I dig in my bag for my phone, and sure enough there’s a text waiting for me from the other realtor.
Offer accepted.
I let out a high-pitched scream as soon as I see it.
